surprise raid on the busi-
nessman's French Quarter
home, which newspapers re-
ported was filled with whips
and other sadomasochistic
paraphernalia. Not long
after the raid, Mr. Shaw was
put on trial for participating
in the conspiracy to kill the
president.
A jury took less than half
an hour to acquit Mr. Shaw,
though the trial is central to
Oliver Stone's film. It is here
that Mr. Garrison, played by
Kevin Costner, presents his
conspiracy theory and gives
an impassioned plea for
upholding truth, justice and
the American way.
Though not shown in the
movie, Mr. Shaw sued Mr.
Garrison for malicious pros-
ecution soon after the trial.
He died of lung cancer before
the case could come to court.

While Professor Slovenko
said he finds Mr. Garrison's
assassination claims
ludicrous, he does under-
stand why some take the
former district attorney se-
riously.

"It's appealing, the idea of
one person standing up
against the government," he
said. "And people like to
believe in conspiracies."
The professor said he be-
lieves it's possible there was
a conspiracy to kill Presi-
dent Kennedy — but not the
way Jim Garrison described
it.
"It's more fiction than
reality," he said of Mr. Gar-
rison's On the Trail of the
Assassins. "What concerns
me is that as time goes by,
more and more people will
think of it as the truth." ❑

Lessons Of Holocaust
In Cable TV Show

T

he Rev. James Lyons
is worried that the
lessons of the Holo-
caust never set in.
Citing recent events here
in the United States, the
Rev. Lyons, director of the
Ecumenical Institute for
Jewish-Christian Studies in
Southfield, hopes to show
that the events of Nazi Ger-
many can repeat them-
selves. What he wants, he
said, is for people to see the
signs.
The Institute is producing
a 13-part series for cable
television, "Echoes of the

The series will
explore
contemporary
issues in light of
the events in Nazi
Germany:
euthanasia,
freedom of the
press, minority
rights and medical
ethics, among
others.

Past," which will explore not
only the history of the Nazi
campaign to destroy
Europe's Jews, but will also
discuss the ethical ramifica-
tions of those events.
The series began airing
last Thursday in Southfield
and Oak Park.
"Everybody talks about
the lessons of the past;
everybody talks about the

lessons of the Holocaust;
everybody always says
`never again,' " said the Rev.
Lyons. "What wb want peo-
ple to do is see that the
lessons are not automatical-
ly learned."
In each half-hour episode,
the Rev. Lyons will discuss
the Holocaust, highlighting
a certain element of Nazi
persecution. Then, -a guest
will discuss whether Nazi
methods are being replicated
now. In the first episode, an
Iraqi Christian will discuss
how an "outsider" can be
harassed and persecuted in
times of war.
In another episode, a pro-
fessor of art history will
discuss how art was manip-
ulated as a political tool.
Other guests will include a
law professor, a journalist, a
Holocaust survivor and an
educational consultant.
The series will explore
contemporary issues in light
of the events in Nazi Ger-
many: euthanasia, freedom
of the press, minority rights
and medical ethics, among
others.
The show will be aired on
public access channels in
Southfield, West Bloomfield
and Oak Park on Continen-
tal Cablevision twice week-
ly. The same show will be on
Thursdays and Saturdays at
7:30 p.m.
Since the program will be
aired on public-access, the
Institute will not have to pay
to air the program. Other
Metro Detroit cable com-
panies have agreed in prin-
ciple to air the series, but
have not yet placed it in
their viewing schedule. ❑
