ART NOWT

Center Galleries
Sculpture Exhibit

The Center Galleries will
host the showing of "Organic
Sensibilities: Recent
Sculpture" by Barbara
Cooper and Joan Livingstone.
Graduates of Cranbrook
Academy of Art and now
residents of Chicago, Ms.
Cooper and Ms. Livingstone
create large-scale sculptures
that are sensual, curvaceous,
and flowing in shape and
outline. The artists' related
but distinctly individual
sculptures suggest the vary-
ing forms and shapes that
organic sculpture can take.
Barbara Cooper's wall-
mounted pieces, made from
interlaced strips of wood,
twist and turn into space.
Joan Livingstone's large-
bodied forms, constructed
from industrial felt stiffened
with resin, evoke organic
forms as seeds, pods and bodi-
ly organs.
A feature of the exhibition
will be a collaborative in-
stallation by the two artists to
display an array of found
organic objects — shells,
bones, vines, leaves — that
they collect and use as in-
spiration and resource
material for their art.
A slide lecture and discus-
sion by the artists, open to the
public, will take place 11:30
a.m. Jan. 16 at Boughton
Auditorium, CCS-Institute of
Music and Dance, John R and
Kirby streets.
The reception to meet the
artists will take place 5-7 p.m.
Jan. 17. "Organic Sen-
sibilities" will be on view
through Feb. 28.
