large statue brought over
from Italy.
Reason for the free under-
ground parking at Chez
Pierre and O'Shea's needs no
further explanation than that
it is owned by Dr. Atallah.
Many people are already
saying, "At last, an honest-to-
goodness French restaurant!"
. . . and in another breath
reveling at the fact that
French cuisine is now known
to lower a person's cholesterol
. . . Also, says Dr. Atallah,
who should know, nothing
like a couple of glasses of
wine for the heart.
So Dr. Atallah can now lay
claim to taking care of people
two ways healthwise . . . his
cardiology practice and Chez
Pierre restaurant . . . with
confirmation on foie gras be-
ing good for the body.
Whooda' thunk it about
French cuisine?

GET WELL WISHES .. .

to Jerry Schwab . . . recover-
ing from a five-way heart by-
pass operation at Beaumont
Hospital.
JUST GETTING out of the
hospital and entertaining
about 170 people is no small
feat . . . and Michele Dubrin-
sky, over a bout with
pneumonia, was her gracious
self again, opening hers and
hubby Max Dubrinsky's new
Bloomfield Hills home for the
recent Michigan Cancer
Foundation.
Their large, beautiful house
was the site of MCF's Circle
of Fellows black-tie fund-
raiser amid a glamorous set-
ting of choice hors d'ouevres
and elegant dinner buffet
catered by Reid Aston and the
Golden Mushroom.
Chilly winds outside but
plenty warm from an electric
heater in a tent with plastic
windows where the Loving
Cup Trio with Marlene Hill
gave out their usual bevy of
fine rhythms for listening and
dancing.
Michele and Max are very
active members of MCF, both
serving on many of its com-
mittees, and he is also a board
member of the Foundation's
Home Care Program.
Most of the attendees opted
to dine and chat at tables set
up inside the Dubrinsky
home, which had to be large
to accommodate so many
people.
Susan Winton-Feinberg
wasn't there to see the home
she completely decorated
elegantly for Max and
Michele . . .Reid Ashton and
Golden Mushroom Chef du
Cuisine Steve Allen can cater
in an igloo but loved the
Dubrinsky huge kitchen .. .
the waitresses too . . . No such
thing as "black tie" anymore
. . . It's just a phrase now

because of the bows being in
every color, pattern and
design imaginable . . . Sort of
takes away from that formal
look . . . Give me the plain
black tie any ol' day . . . Dr.
Herb Bloom and John Bloom,
not related but know each
other many years . . . Herb is
the oldest MCF member, go-
ing back when it was called
Detroit Institute For Cancer
Research.
Dr. Daniel Panush was to
have been at the Detroit Red
Wings hockey game that
night but came with wife
Sandy because of Max .. .
And that's some sacrifice,
folks, getting Dan to give up
going to a Red Wings game
. . . Mary Lamparter in her
knockout, off-the-shoulder
dress . . . Frank and Betty
Ellias always so warm and
cordial . . . Anthony Apple-
baum co-chairpersons of the
10th annual dinner, "A
Championship Evening at
The Palace" by MCF, May 9
. . . Doreen Hermelin a stand-
out in red . . . She and Dave
will be honorary chairguy
and gal of the event that last
year raised more than
$400,000 for cancer research
and Michigan Cancer Foun-
dation community service
programs.

THAT BEAUTIFUL

aroma before the screening of

Bugsy at Abbey 8 Theatre on

14 Mile was from a Dinty
Moore sandwich Lenny Fidler
had brought from his Gate-
way Deli in Harvard Row, 11
Mile and Lahser . . . and ate
while others around him
drooled.
The story of Ben "Bugsy"
Siegel wouldn't have met the
approval of the late Sid
"Hodash" Hudson, who went
to Las Vegas from here .. .
Bugsy gave him a place to
live at his new Flamingo
Hotel . . . without ever raising
his rent . . . Sid often told me
what a swell guy Bugsy was
. . . even if he did go berserk
and at times harmed people
. . . But Sid used to say he
never hurt anybody who
didn't have it coming.
I was a bit disappointed, too
. . . waiting for the moment
when Ben, through his good
friend, George Raft, would
transport all those movie
stars to the Flamingo opening
. . . which he did . . . but it
never happened in the film
. . . Only thing shown was
Ben looking out the window
at the rain and the back-
ground of an almost empty
casino . . . But I guess Holly-
wood has a license to do what-
ever it wants to make a story
. . . even to the point of
melodrama instead of fact
which was sorrowfully lack-
ing.
