Some readers are drawn to
Chutzpah, which one re-
viewer recently called "A
declaration of independence
for American Jews," be-
cause it sanctions Jewish
pride. Brad Hershfield, a
rabbinic student at the In-
stitute of Traditional Juda-
ism said that "Chutzpah is
the most prideful Jewish
book since Meir Kahane
wrote in the 1970s, but de-
void of its violence and
hostility."
Chutzpah's bold asser-
tions, and its discussions on
anti-Semitism and the Holo-
caust, have led to numerous
discussions about the book's
message.
At a Friday night dinner
at the UCLA Hillel in early
fall, undergraduate and
graduate students split on
whether or not the book's
implications were correct or
even healthy for the Jewish
community.
"There are those who see
in Dershowitz their spokes-
man, their advocate, and
their cheerleader," said
Hillel Rabbi Chaim Seidler-
Feller about a group of stu-
dents more willing to accept
their status as perpetual
victims. "Dershowitz is ba-
sically telling you not to
think you are ever not the
underdog, and you have to
fight all the time."
Other students, Rabbi
Seidler-Feller explained,
were put off by what ap-
peared to be simplistic ex-
planations for Jewish ideas
and issues, and the framing
of the current American
Jewish experience around
the Holocaust.
"The bottom line for Der-
showitz is the Holocaust. He
makes it central in his
book," said Rabbi Seidler-
Feller. "He says we should
accept [philosopher Emil]
Fackenheim's 614th com-
mandment — not to give
Hitler a posthumous victo-
ry. My question is, what has
he done with the other
