power, V-8 engine, four-speed
electronically controlled
transmission and four-wheel
double-wishbone suspension.
The car features sleekly
curved lines, superb handling,
sporty styling, is priced in the
low $40,000 range and was
designed at Toyota's Calty
Design Center in Newport
Beach, Calif.
Also new for 1992 is the
SC300, a six-cylinder version
of the SC400, and later in the
year, Lexus will introduce the
ES300 sedan as a replace-
ment for the ES250.
MAZDA
For the past couple of years,
it seems that Mazda can do no
wrong. It has had solid sales
with just about all its models,
especially the popular Miata.
For 1992, its already in-
troduced the MX-3 GS sport
coupe that has a fluid, tear-
drop design, rear hatch, spor-
ty interior and seats four.
Power is supplied by a
130-horsepower V-6 engine
that drives the front wheels
via a five-speed manual
transmission.
With a design that
features smoothly
contoured lines,
the four-door
Diamante is
equipped with
leather seats
(optional), a wood
trim, and comes
with a high-level of
performance
equipment,
including four-
wheel disc brakes.
MITSUBISHI
Following the successful
heels of Infiniti and Lexus,
Mitsubishi entered the lux-
ury market earlier this year
with the 1992 Diamante.
However, unlike other
Japanese luxury marks, the
Diamante remains a model
and is not a separate brand.
With a design that features
smoothly contoured lines, the
four-door Diamante is equip-
ped with leather seats (op-
tional), wood trim, and comes
with a high-level of perfor-
mance equipment, including
four-wheel disc brakes with
anti-lock system and indepen-
dent suspension. Power is
supplied by a 175-horsepower
V-6 engine driving the front
wheels through a four-speed
automatic transmission.
This year auto buyers have
many choices in the moderate
price range. Here are some of
the new models for 1992.
MERCEDES-BENZ
BUICK
On Jan. 7, Mercedes will
unveil its 1993 500SEC S-
class prototype at the North
American International Auto
Show in Detroit. The first all-
new remake of the big Benz
in more than 11 years, the
new S-class will be available
with six-, eight- or 12-cylinder
engines. All S-class autos
feature two-zone climate
control.
For 1992, Buick has
redesigned the compact
Skylark and full-size LeSabre
lines, introduced the new
Roadmaster model (sedan and
wagon), plus added a super-
charger as standard equip-
ment to the flagship Park
Avenue Ultra. With these
changes, GM's line of
"premium American motor-
cars" has been completely
redesigned. Exterior skins
are all extremely aero-
looking, and interiors are
drastically changed from
previous models.
PORSCHE
Offered as a replacement for
the 944, the new 968 coupe
redesigned interior, plus op-
tional air suspension.
Tempo/Mercury 'Ibpaz re-
ceive minor exterior styling
changes, and the Thunder-
bird/Mercury Cougar get a
new modular 4.6-liter, V-8
engine to replace the current
5.0-liter V-8.
New for this year, and in-
troduced this past April, are
scheduled. Subaru is putting
most of its efforts into a new
sports car called SVX, which
replaces the XT6 model.
TOYOTA
The popular Corolla and
Camry lines get restyled for
'92. Camry gets less boxy,
wider and a more powerful
Pontiac Brand AM 6T Coupe
the 1992 Crown Victoria and
Mercury Grand Marquis
sedans. These full-size rear-
wheel-drive sedans feature
six-passenger roominess, V-8
power and sleek styling.
OLDSMOBILE
Buick Skylark Gran Sport
has a more curvaceous body
(a la 928) and is powered by a
240-horsepower, four-cylinder
engine. Standard equipment
includes anti-lock braking,
air bags for both driver and
passenger, and Tiptronic
automatic or six-speed
manual transmission.
SUBARU
The all-new SVX represents
quite a departure for Subaru.
Designed as a 2 + 2 sports
coupe, the SVX has modern
lines, looks somewhat akin to
the Diamond Star cars
Eclipse and Talon, and it
replaces the outdated XT-6
sports couple.
Features on the new coupe
include a one-piece unit body,
integrated air bag system,
four-channel anti-lock brakes,
active torque-split all-wheel-
drive, and four-wheel in-
dependent suspension. Power
is supplied by a four-cam,
24-valve, 3.3-liter engine that
is horizontally opposed and
produces 230 horsepower.
CHEVROLET
Chevrolet is refining and
doing minor restyles across
the line. Geo Metro and
Storm models get new noses
and tails, Beretta and Corsica
get new interiors, and the
Lumina APV gets a larger,
more powerful V-6 engine as
an option.
CHRYSLER
With the introduction of the
new Dodge Viper sports car
and Jeep ZJ sport utility,
Chrysler has made only
minimal upgrades to its car
line. The most significant
changes are that the
Plymouth Laser and Eagle
Talon sports cars get restyled
front and rear ends.
FORD/MERCURY
Minor restyling is the key
to almost all of Ford Motor
Co.'s '92 offerings. Taurus/
Mercury Sable get new front
and rear panels and a
Although most of the Olds-
mobile lineup for '92 is a
carry-over with minor styling
tweaks, the Eighty-Eight
model gets a complete
remake with modern styling,
new interior, anti-lock brakes,
driver's side air bag and more
powerful V-6 engine. Other
changes to the line include
engine upgrades in the Tour-
ing Sedan, Cutlass Supreme
and Ninety-Eight models.
engine. Corolla, Toyota's best-
selling car, continues its
evolution into a more sporty
line and will be introduced in
the fall of '92. The new Cor-
olla, larger than the current
model, will be powered by a
new, 20-valve four-cylinder
engine. ❑
PONTIAC
Both Bonneville and Grand
Am get remakes this year.
Grand Am is longer and
wider and has a new interior
and restyled exterior. Handl-
ing is also improved and
steering is more responsive
thanks to new variable-ratio
power steering.
Bonneville, Pontiac's flag-
ship, gets a new exterior, in-
terior and supercharged V-6
under the hood for SSEi
models. Other improvements
include ABS as standard on
some models, air bags and op-
tional traction control.
SUBARU
