The National Highway
Traffic Safety Administration
estimates an air bag combin-
ed with a lap-and-shoulder
belt reduces chances of fatali-
ty in a crash by 45 to 55
percent.
Many sport utility vehicles,
Patricia Waller points out,
"are much more prone to
rollover in an accident." She
adds that they don't provide
as much protection because
they aren't yet — but soon
will be — required to conform
to federal safety standards
regulating passenger cars.
Whatever the car, a teen-
ager who has an investment
in it probably will be a safer
driver. "I think it works out
better," says Ms. McPeek, "if
parents ask their teen-agers
to take some financial respon-
sibility. Then there's a pride
of ownership and probably a
willingness to take better
care of the vehicle."
Eventually, most teen-agers
will love any car that takes
them where they want to go.
Ms. McPeek tells of a 15-year-
old who talked about his
automotive aspirations. He
was going to get a Camaro, he
said, or maybe even a Cor-
vette. If he had his druthers,
it would be a Ferrari
Testarossa (about $170,000).
He ended up, she says, with a
1986 Chevrolet Nova, on
which his parents expected
him to help with payments
and maintenance. When she
asked how he liked it, the new
motorist said, "Oh, it's just
great!" ❑
