Olim Arrive
From Odessa
Tel Aviv (JTA) — The
Greek passenger ship
Mediterranean Sky docked
in Haifa last week with 447
olim from Odessa, and for a
while time seemed to have
retreated to the 1950s.
Few immigrants have
arrived by sea since those
days when Israel itself had
an active fleet of passenger
liners bringing olim and
tourists from Europe and
North America.
For the last 25 to 30 years,
virtually all arrivals have
been by air, which is not
only quicker but cheaper.
This time, however, the Jew-
ish Agency was not picking
up the tab.
The Mediterranean Sky
was chartered by the
Ebenezer Emergency Fund,
a British-based society of
evangelical Christians who
believe the return of the
Jewish people to their
ancestral homeland will
speed the coming of the Mes-
siah.
The Absorption Ministry,
which is headed by an Or-
thodox Jew, had some
qualms about the purpose of
the assistance. But the
Ebenezers pledged to do no
proselytizing during the
four-day voyage. They
allowed rabbis to sail to
make sure the passengers
from the former Soviet
Union were fed strictly
kosher food.
Officials of the Absorption,
Interior and Police min-
istries were able to complete
their paperwork during the
voyage.
There were other advan-
tages to sea travel. The bag-
gage allowance was 550
pounds per passenger.
