Everything that lives, lives,
said the living,
But, my brothers, don't fear a
dead man.
He will never, never
Be able to express regret.

Regret
When they asked me to
express regret
It was already too late.
I had gone too far, I told
myself
And them, to express regret.

A Poem For Guni
I can't fathom what caused
you to take along
That particular poem about
the dead man
Whom the worms won't allow
to express regret:
A dubious thing to take on a
journey from which you
failed to return.
Perhaps you thought my
words would serve as a
lucky charm,
As a scapegoat, so that you
would not die at 26, my
age
When I wrote that poem.
Good night, your mother said
in bidding farewell. No
worm
Will any longer separate you
from a good night
Nor a bad night either.
From you and your comrades
I learn the courage I
lacked at your age.
I am now the pupil of all of
you, have become your
pupil,
You who took my poem to the
battlefield,
I incorporate your death into
my own being.
I will strive to be worthy of
it. ❑

most of her life in this
country.
Most of the verse in Ms.
Lami's recently published
Parlando Rubato dwells upon
the wonders of nature, but she
also describes things that are
more contemporary.
Even those who did not
leave their own verses behind
often left evidence of their
love for the verses of others.
Such was the case with Guni
Harnik, commander of the
Golani Scout Unit who was
killed, with six of his corn-
rades, when they attacked
and captured the Beaufort
Fortress on the opening day of
the war in Lebanon.
Among his belongings was
found a poem by Natan Zach,
one of the best-Israeli poets. It
reads as follows:
