anger, who cannot do what a
workshop or books on the
subject recommend, may
need professional help.
Like the other experts, Ms.
Posner also thinks that ex-
pressing anger in-
discriminately can be
destructive. "In the work
place, one often has to do
what's political. In a family,
between parent and young
child, one has to do what's in
the best interest of the
child," she says.

Forgiveness

Dr. Richard Fitzgibbons, a
Pennsylvania psychiatrist
who has written a book on
anger, calls it "the least
understood emotion." He br-
ings another approach to the
new relationship to anger.
"If you look at how we
treat anger, there have been
two options so far: denial or
expression. What I stress is a
third option for resolving
anger: forgiveness. And
what I mean by that is the
intellectual or emotional
decision to try to understand
the cause of the problem
and, with time, to forgive,"
Dr. Fitzgibbons says. "When
you forgive someone, you
break their control over
you."
Dr. Fitzgibbons stresses
anger resolution, rather
than expression, because it
is very difficult for most peo-
ple to express their anger
about a specific cir-
cumstance without bringing
to that situation similar,
unresolved anger about
events in their very early
past.
"By that time we reach
adulthood, we've buried
more anger than we have
any awareness of," he says.
"There's a pool of anger
we're under, and we over-
react. There are many, many
dangers of expressing
anger."
Dr. Fitzgibbons believes
that training in the skill of
forgiveness should begin at a
young age. "Ideally, we
should teach kids as they're
growing up that they're go-
ing to be disappointed with
their mothers and fathers,
that mothers and fathers are
human, and that it's OK to
forgive Mommy and Daddy."
Greek and Roman
philosophers advocated
forgiveness as a treatment
for anger but, he says,
"modern therapists haven't
used forgiveness because
they think of it as spiritual."
Moreover, he adds,
"historically, the mental
health field was developed
by men like Freud and Jung
who had terrible father rela-
