Breast Cancer

Continued from preceding page

$225, 80 percent of which is
usually covered by insurance.
When Roslyn Rock was in-
itially trained as a certified
prosthesis fitter, there was
one form available and it sold
for $15. "Today!' she says,
"surgical procedures leave
very little radical impressions
and with the wide choice of
prostheses, the mastectomy
patient is able to wear bras
and swimwear from regular
stock!" The owner of Roslyn's
Intimate Apparel in Apple-
gate Square in Southfield,
Roslyn observes that most
women come in terribly ner-
vous, and 30 minutes later,
they're leaving with a smile.
Roslyn is adept at working
with mastectomy and lumpec-
tomy patients, and often
helps them select beautiful
bras, bathing suits and
lingerie. She cautions women
not to assess their appearance
until they are fully clothed,
and adds, "There certainly is
enough fashion around for
everyone to have a beautiful
look!'
While some patients simp-
ly breeze through their treat-
ment, for most there are some
side effects, and even at the
minimal level, they can cause
enormous disruptions in one's
life. In addition to the emo-
tional issues, there are the
physical changes wrought by
certain drug therapies.
According to Suzanne Lowy,
physician's assistant to Dr.
Vanitus Vaitkevicius at
Harper Hospital, changes in
skin tone, especially in dark
complected individuals, are
not unusual, particularly
around the knuckles and
nails, around blemishes and
birthmarks. Skin often
becomes more sensitive and
needs greater protection from
the sun. An increase in
bilirubin can affect skin col-
or while a lower hemoglobin
can cause a sallow ap-
pearance. Puffiness from
steroids is almost always tem-
porary, as is hair loss from
chemotherapy. Such is not the
case with hair loss from
radiation.
Temporary skin changes
can be easily dealt with, with
the help of a good makeup ar-
tist. One such person is Amy
Regal, owner of Maquiage, a
skin care and makeup system
based at Bloomies in Farm-
ington Hills. Having worked
with many cancer patients as
well as post-operative plastic
surgery patients, she is aware
of the unique needs of these
women of whom she says,
"They've lost their eyebrows
and eyelashes; their skin tone
has changed . . . they aren't
seeing their familiar selves in
the mirror."
Using a variety of techni-

ques, Amy teaches a client
how to compensate for the
many changes. She will
recommend the proper
makeup tones and colors, ap-
propriate makeup tools and
sometimes, skin care pro-
ducts. Her makeup
philosophy for all clients em-
phasizes softness, simplicity
and neutral tones.
Recognizing that not all
cancer patients are well
enough or willing to come to
her, she is happy to make
house calls. Other services in-
clude complete makeup
lessons, a personal makeup
video, custom blending of
foundation and specialized
skin care products, all of
which contain a sunscreen.
"When you feel better about
yourself and your appearance,
you're able to function and ac-
complish things you never
thought you could do," Amy
asserts.

side effects from chemo-

therapy and radiation is the
loss of hair, and many women
opt to wear a wig. Wendy's
Wig Salon in Livonia offers a
large variety of synthetic
wigs which, when purchased,
are custom cut and styled to
suit the client's face. Most of
Wendy's wigs are made of
Ellura, which allows the
client to wash her wig at
home, although according to
Jeanie Simons, owner of Wen-
dy's, the shop offers complete
wig care services.
Wendy's also carries a large
variety of head coverings, in-
cluding turbans, which come
with, or to which you can add,
fake bangs. Jeanie will show
the customer how to enhance
certain turbans with
beautiful scarves. There are
turbans in terry and velour in
over 25 colors, as well as in
prints and a brand new varie-
ty of metallics.
Additionally, Wendy's
works with children who need
wigs and carries a large selec-
tion of hair pieces. Prices
range from $90 for a short
wig to $135 for a longer one.
Chanie's Wig Salon in Oak
Park is also an excellent
source for wigs. While Chanie
carries numerous synthetic
wigs, she usually recom-
mends the human hair-
synthetic blend wigs which
have 25 to 80 percent human
