12,000 Jewish Papers
In 300 Year Span
Tel Aviv (JTA) —
Somewhere between 10,000
and over 12,000 Jewish
newspapers have been
published in a variety of
languages all over the world
since the first one was laun-
ched in Holland more than
300 years ago, according to a
study by Tel Aviv Univer-
sity's Institute for the Jew-
ish Press.
Jewish newspapers have
appeared in countries as far
apart as China and Chile,
Norway and New Zealand,
said Dr. Mordechai Naor,
editor of the institute's
periodical, and Shalom
Rosenfeld, head of Tel Aviv
University's journalism
department.
Because it appeared im-
possible to actually tally the
number, Mr. Naor and Mr.
Rosenfeld focused on the
languages in which they
have been published. They
unearthed Jewish news-
papers in 40 tongues, and
published pictures of their
front covers last week in the
Language Atlas of the Jew-
ish Press Worldwide.
Among them is Marathi,
an Indian language spoken
by the Bene Israel Jews of
Bombay. In fact, from the
mid-19th century through
the 1940s, several Jewish
periodicals were published
in India in Marathi and
Arabic, as well as English.
And in Tat, the language
of the mountain Jews of
Central Asia, the Commu-
nist Party of Soviet
Dagestan published
Zehmetkesh (The Worker).
Another find was the
publication Al Gala (The
Diaspora), a Zionist news-
paper in Argentina written
in Arabic. The paper was
edited by a Beirut-born Jew,
Aharon Sitron, who im-
migrated to Argentina in
1909. The newspaper was
shut down after a fire
destroyed its press.
According to Mr. Naor and
Mr. Rosenfeld, "The most
popular languages of the
Jewish press during its 305
years of existence were
Yiddish, Ladino, Hebrew,
German, English, Russian,
Polish and French."
Yiddish, the language
Ashkenazic Jews brought
from Europe to North and
South America, was domi-
nant until World War II,
after which Hebrew replaced
it.
Ladino is the language of
the Jews whose ancestors
came from the Iberian pen-
insula.
Hebrew characters were
used to print some Jewish
newspapers in German,
Arabic and Persian, while
Yiddish, Ladino and even a
Hebrew newspaper have ap-
peared in Latin script.
Some Jewish newspapers
were bilingual, trilingual or
even a quatrilingual paper,
in Romania. Mr. Naor and
Mr. Rosenfeld believe
publication in a non-Jewish
language or bilingual format
"reflected a longing for Jew-
ish emancipation in certain
countries as well as
assimilationist tendencies."
The oldest Jewish news-
paper publishing today is
the Jewish Chronicle of Lon-
don, which is celebrating its
150th anniversary this mon-
th.
The Chronicle, a weekly,
appears on Friday. In 1917,
the British Foreign Office
deliberately delayed an-
nouncement of the Balfour
Declaration favoring a Jew-
ish homeland in Palestine
for several days so that the
Chronicle could publish it at
the same time as the daily
press.
More than 300 years ago a
newspaper, Courante, was
published in Yiddish. Its
contemporary, Gazeta de
Amsterdam, appeared in
Ladino. Scholars are divided
over which was the first.
Body Found
Of Flood Victim
Tel Aviv (JTA) — The body
of a soldier was found in the
Yarkon River last week
more than 15 miles from
where a flash flood swept his
truck into a dry stream bed
that had become a raging
torrent during fierce
rainstorms on Dec. 3.
The remains of Sgt. Maj.
Natan Russo, 38, of Kfar
Sava were retrieved with
much difficulty hours after
soldiers spotted it from a
bridge over the Wadi Ayalon
between Tel Aviv and Ben-
Gurion Airport.
The fast-flowing stream,
swollen by a fresh
rainstorm, carried the body
into the Yarkon River north
of Tel Aviv, where army
helicopters lowered two di-
vers in an unsuccessful at-
tempt to retrieve it.
The flood waters threaten-
ed to sweep it out to sea,
where the Yarkon enters the
Mediterranean. But the
body was pulled ashore after
it caught on the overhanging
branches of trees.
