T he problem ingredients in soda pop, which are also found in innumerable other products, are the flavorings and col- ors. A partial list of some of the problems is as follows: FLAVORS: Food flavorings may consist of many substances, both natural and synthetic. Flavors may be produced from fats and oils of either animal or vegetable origin or from petrochemicals. "Natural flavors" too are not automatically Kosher (a pig is also "natural"). Many flavors contain enzymes and extracts from various animal organs. Some examples are: ambergris — derived from the intestines of sperm whales ; castoreum — derived from beaver glands and used in berry flavors: civet — derived from the Ethiopian civet cat and us- ed to blend flavors, or with alcohol and cheese flavors. Some flavors also contain (non- listed) dairy ingredients. COLORINGS: Government regulations permit coloring substances which may be of natural and/or synthetic origin. Some problematic col- ors are: carmine or cochineal — derived from the dried bodies of certain insects; carotene — generally synthetic but often marketed in tiny beads of gelatin which is not Kosher. (Gelatin will be discussed in a later column.) SPICE OILS OR EXTRACTS: Substances add- ed to these products to increase their solubili- ty may be either animal or vegetable derived. In point of fact, when Faygo Beverage Co. agreed to "go kosher" they needed to change several ingredients. As for as other soda pop beverages are con- cerned, most nationally available brands (Pep- si, 7 UP, Coke, etc.) are kosher.
