No Intervention
On Concert

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Neither
the Knesset nor the govern-
ment will intervene in the
Israel Philharmonic Or-
chestra's decision to perform
works by Richard Wagner at
a special concert despite
raised tempers in Israel.
The Ministry of Education
and Culture will issue no
desist order to the IPO,
Deputy Education Minister
Pinhas Goldstein informed
Knesset members Tuesday.
The Knesset also washed its
hands of the matter, saying
it was up to the IPO.
The members of Israel's
internationally acclaimed
symphony orchestra decided
by majority vote last week to
lift its ban on performing
music by the 19th-century
German composer, an avow-
ed anti-Semite who became a
Nazi icon.
Despite the heat generated
by the issue, a Knesset
debate on the subject was
sparsely attended. But emo-
tions ran high among the 15
members present, whose
opinions crossed party lines.
Avrum Burg of the Labor
Party, Elyakim Haetzni of
Tehiya and Reuven Rivlin. of
Likud spoke out against the
public performance of
Wagner. Mordechai Vir-
shubski of the Citizens
Rights Movement, a Ger-
man-born refugee from Nazi
persecution, argued in its
favor.
Mr. Rivlin said the deci-
sion to boycott Wagner in
Israel since the state was
founded was "symbolic of
national values."
"There never has been and
never will be a statute of
limitations," he said.
Mr. Virshubski observed
that while Israelis do not
boycott Volkswagen and
Mercedes cars, both
"pungent symbols of the
Nazi regime," they are will-
ing to boycott Wagner be-
cause it requires no material
sacrifice.
Mr. Goldstein explained
that the Education Ministry
does not interfere in the
decisions of artistic and
cultural institutions. He
noted that the IPO has a
public committee with the
right to advise members how
to conduct themselves.
The Wagner concert will
be performed under the
baton of Daniel Barenboim,
an Israeli pianist and con-
ductor who is an authority
on Wagner. It is outside the
subscription series so that
regular concertgoers will not
feel Wagner's music is being
forced on them.
