While shunned by the
Democratic party, Mr. Duke
received about 23,000 votes
from Louisiana during the
primary. In 1989, Mr. Duke
turned that core support —
plus a voter backlash
against outsiders trying to
sway votes against him —
into an election victory for
state representative.
Three months after the
victory, Mr. Duke spoke to
the anti-Semitic Populist
Party's meeting in Chicago,
telling them that he "did it
. . . for you." By this time,
Mr. Duke had switched his
affiliation to the Republican
Party. Louisiana State
Republican committee
member Beth Rickey, in the
audience at that speech,
forced Mr. Duke to apologize
to his colleagues in the Loui-
siana House.
It was also discovered, dur-
ing 1989, that Mr. Duke sold
anti-Semitic literature from
his state office, and
employed on his staff a man
with neo-Nazi connections.
Up until this period, Mr.
Duke would celebrate Adolf
Hitler's birthday with ice
cream, cake and a few "Sieg
Heils." In 1990, Mr. Duke,
running for U.S. Senate,
won 44 percent of the vote,
tapping white voter
dissatisfaction with affir-
mative action, welfare pro-
grams and taxes.
Last month, Mr. Duke won
39 percent of the vote in the
Louisiana gubernatorial
race against Edwin Ed-
wards.
"David Duke is a Nazi,"
writes the AJCommittee's
Mr. Stern. "Through
cosmetic surgery, three-
piece suits, a sophisticated
understanding of the media
and use of sugar-coated code
words that combine racial
and economic fears, Duke
has made himself into a na-
tional figure." ❑
