pretation of U.N. Security
Council resolutions 242 and
338 as signifying une-
quivocally "land for peace!'
It is no secret that the
American Jewish Congress
has long been at odds with
the policies of the Likud
government and has been
rebuked by Prime Minister
Shamir for its chronic forays
into "high-level diplomacy,"
such as its "high profile" mis-
sion to Jordan's King
Hussein.
This fact does not detract
from the high-mindedness, in-
tegrity and devotion to Israel
of the AJCongress leaders in-
volved in these discussions.
What is quite clear, however,
is that these amateur ven-
tures into diplomacy are not
likely to be applauded in
Jerusalem.
As a footnote, Saudi Arabia
still voted against rescinding
U.N. resolution 3379 defam-
ing Zionism, thus re-
affirming Israel's "il-
legitimacy."

I enjoyed the "Round Up"
piece, "Christmas Cowboys,
Jewish Composers" (Dec. 13).
You may find it interesting
to note that composer Gerald
Marks, for many years a resi-
dent of New York City, was
born in Saginaw and spent a
good part of the '20s and '30s
as an orchestra leader based
in Detroit.
"That's What I Want for
Christmas" — one of his two
songs in your list — was sung
by Shirley Temple in her 1936
picture, Stowaway.
The other Marks song, "If It
Doesn't Snow on Christmas,"
was on the flip side of the
original 1949 recording of
Gene Autry's version of
"Rudolph the Red-Nosed
Reindeer", one of the biggest-
selling discs of all time, if not
the actual champ.
Finally, here are a few more
entries for your list:
"Don't Wait 'Til the Night
Before Christmas" by Sam
Lewis and Abel Baer in 1938.
"Happy Christmas, Little
Friend" by Richard Rodgers
and Oscar Hammerstein. It
had the rare (if not unique)
distinction of being first
published in a year-end issue
of Life magazine in 1952.
"Holly Holy" by Neil Dia-
mond (1970).
And "Yuletide, Park
Avenue" from the hit musical
Call Me Mister by Harold
Rome in 1946.

The Present
Alternative

In response to Phil Jacobs'
article "The nicest presents
aren't gift-wrapped" (Dec. 6),
never has an article hit the
nail on the head as did that
one.
I am in accord with his
thinking 100 percent. Does
Mother's Day, Father's Day
and all other calendar dates
have to be just "calendar
dates?" In my opinion the
calendar dates are a one-day-
a-year cleansing for one's soul
to atone for the non-givers all
year long. My philosophy is
"to give when needed is to
receive." It is self-rewarding.
Unfortunately, I am not a
journalist, so I do not have the
command of the words, nor
am I able to put my thoughts
in proper perspective. There-
fore, I am thankful that Mr.
Jacobs so perfectly published
my sentiments.
We live in a world torn by
turmoil. This is a perilous
period for Israel and a trying
time for our Ethiopian Jews
who need help to live without
hunger and deprivation and
for our Russian families and
friends who are suffering
from hunger and starvation.
To aid the needy is the biggest
and most beautiful gift we
can give without being "gift-
wrapped," but wrapped
around our hearts.

Southfield Editorial
Is Appreciated

Thank you for your strong
editorial in the Dec. 13
Jewish News encouraging the
preservation of the Jewish
community in Southfield. It
is, of course, true that many
Jewish families have moved
out, but others are moving in.
Currently, most of the new
families are Orthodox, but
our New Americans and
other young families are
beginning to see the advan-
tages in terms of central loca-
tion, affordable prices and a
good school system .. .
