TWO OF WINDSOR'S
Wish
Everyone
now recalls, "Everyone in our
business has a shot at writing
this kind of stuff, but I was
the first to make a whole
record of it." That was in ear-
ly 1986, when Lenny used his
considerable powers of per-
suasion to issue an entire
album of shlock, in which
each track was a converted
hit song with new lyrics, in
English but with Jewish
content.
The album sold slowly at
first but had, by the summer,
become the strongest-selling
record in the Catskills and
elsewhere in the American-
Jewish market. Based on this
success, Lenny and his
associates were able to make
a second record in March
1987 and put on their first
live show as "Shlock-Rock" in
September that year. A
distinct sub-species of rock
music, and a new genre of
Jewish music had been born
— to growing public acclaim.
Since then, the Shiock-Rock
band of six has been produc-
ing an album every 12-18
months and performing any-
where between 50 and 100
shows a year. The six-man
band comprises three part-
timers — a lawyer, a doctor
and a dentist — two full-time
musicians for whom Shlock-
Rock is only part of their ac-
tivity, and Lenny himself, for
whom Shlock-Rock is his sole
occupation.
In addition to "shlock," Len-
ny has increasingly sought to
develop his own original
songs, and has issued three
other albums of this material
and intersperses both sytles
in the group's performances.
But even within shlock, the
direction has changed. What
started out as a joke has
become more serious and
more overtly educational as
time goes on. Beginning with
Shlock-Rock Three, an album
entitled "To Unite All Jews,"
every album has had its own
theme, and the latest, Shlock-
Rock V, is focused firmly on
Jewish history.
Lenny Solomon and Shlock-
Rock have already appeared
in many major cities in North
America, as well as in South
Africa and Australia. Lenny
is now seeking to broaden his
toe-hold in Israel into a more
substantial involvement in
the Israeli scene, thereby to
achieve world-wide presence
in Jewish music. Shlock-Rock
V, the lastest album (released
in September 1991) confirms
to the existing band of afi-
cionados, and will probably
reveal to many more new-
comers to the genre, that this
band should not only be seen
and heard, but also listened
to.
