and Arab quarters to the
Damascus Gate.

Ms. Silver's tour also
records the history of the
development of the camera.
The first photographers used
heavy and cumbersome
equipment; dust was a great
enemy of their glass plates
and their chemicals some-
times boiled over in the heat.
On occasion they would have
stones thrown at them by a
suspicious local population,
and could often only take two
or three photographs a day.
When in 1888 George
Eastman developed the first
automatic box camera,
tourists were suddenly able to
take pictures with ease and
take home a personal memen-
to of their trip to the Holy
Land.
As the early photographs
mainly took pictures that
would appeal to the Christian
market, there are few old
photographs of the Jewish
Quarter, and even fewer of
Jews. Christians tended to
find the Moslem, in his exotic
Eastern garb, to be closer to
their image of the Bible than
the Jews from eastern
Europe. These photographs
tend to reinforce stereotypes
of the Jew.
The changes in the land-
scapes and skylines are im-
portant for historians and the
different costumes worn from
the middle of the last century
to the first decades of this cen-
tury testify to the changing
mores of these turbulent
decades in Israel's pre-state
history. 0
