the same time and the radio
was happily announcing rain
in all parts of Israel.
Because of the storm, the
power at our camp was out. It
was pitch black when I arriv-
ed at the gate; but, as I was
walking toward the barracks,
voices called my name — it
was some of the volunteers
who had come to the gate to
meet me with an umbrella
and flashlight. I was very
touched!
We were given two tours
during the three-week period
which took us to Gedera,
Ramla, Hadera, Binyamina,
Ein Had, Caesarea and
Jerusalem. I was given the
honor of accompanying the
doctor from our base to pur-
chase an EKG unit which our
group presented to the base
hospital for use of the base
and surrounding towns who
were desperately in need of
the unit. Indescribable emo-
tions — tears of happiness
and joy were shed by both the
Israelis and ourselves upon
its purchase and presenta-
tion.
Michael Allouche, our
madrick, who was our guide
on the tour of Jerusalem,
summed up in these words
what we had asked pertain-
ing to the forthcoming peace
talks and he said: "Israel was
given to us by God. Israel
feels it will achieve peace and
find a solution one day. It is
meant that Israel and its peo-
ple will reach peace — the Bi-
ble says so — so it is written
and so it will be. Don't lose
hope — Peace and hope go
together."
Despite the lack of certain
cidences and bonding is con-
still love and miss Israel.
The work as a volunteer is
not easy. The exchange of
emotion, experience, coin-
cidences and bonding are con-
suming and addicting. The ac-
commodations are far from
what we're accustomed to;
but, life in Israel is not a piece
of cake.
The satisfaction one gains
in this program far super-
cedes the energy expended. If
what I did made a difference
then I accomplished what I
had intended to do.
As one person put it: It
takes only one hand to write
a check to Israel, but it takes
two hands and two feet to
come to Israel and work. My
n
_ eshamah (soul) is in Israel.
They have built a homeland
with their sweat, tears and
blood. Life in Israel is difficult
and lives are always threaten-
ed; yet, they accept this, stand
for and strive for peace. The
Israelis are optimistic that
some day they will achieve
shalom — peace!! Let us all
pray they do. ❑
