One should know by now not
to cross paths with au-
thor/Harvard law pro-
fessor/high-priced defense
attorney Alan Dershowitz. A
Dershowitz scorned is a Der-
showitz angered, and when
Alan Dershowitz is on the
warpath, word mincing is a
rarity.
Yet, the Dec. 2 issue of The
Nation devoted an entire
page to an eight-panel car-
toon by Edward Sorel entitl-
ed "Chutzpah." The Yiddish
adjective referred to both
Mr. Dershowitz's best-
selling book and to its au-
thor's personality.
In the strip, a wife reminds
her spouse that Professor
Dershowitz had written an
op-ed last year that "argued
for long prison terms for
(Michael) Milken and other
inside traders (on Wall
Street)."
She next says, "Milken
has hired Dershowitz to
work on his case, so sudden-
ly Dershowitz is yelling that
Milken is completely inno-
cent. How's that for chutz-
pah?"
"That's not chutzpah," an-
swers her husband. "That's
selling out."
"Wait," she says. "He says
the reason he thought
Milken was guilty was be-
cause he had been misled by
the press. Isn't that chutz-
pah?"
"No. That's just dema-
goguery."
Finally, the wife explodes
that Professor Dershowitz
has accused the author of
Den of Thieves, a recent book
about Mr. Milken, of being
anti-Semitic. In an ad in the
New York Times, she says,
the lawyer made the same
charge against the paper's

critic who had given the
book a rave review.
"If that's not chutzpah,"
she rages, "what is?!!"
"Well," answers her hus-
band, "for example, you're a
Jew who's crass, hypocrit-
ical, publicity-hungry and
opportunistic, and instead of
trying to disguise these
traits you write a book tell-
ing other Jews they ought to
be more like you.
"That's chutzpah."
In its current issue, The
Nation devotes almost two
full columns to an

"If that's not
chutzpah," she

impassioned retort from Mr.
Dershowitz. Cartoonist
Sorel, he asserts, got "every
fact wrong."
The Harvard professor
says he 1) argued for "some
rational alternative to send-
ing Mr. Milken to prison for
10 years," and "never"
sought a "long prison term"
for the financier; 2) noted
that Den of Thieves' author
"invoked religious stereo-
types, and "never" called
him anti-Semitic; 3) a Times'
reviewer "characterized a
book written by (the re-
viewer of Den of Thieves) as
anti-Semitic."
"It is noteworthy," con-
cludes Mr. Dershowitz, "that
neither Sorel nor The Nation
would criticize an African-
American or other minority
person for alerting the
public to comparable racism
against other minorities.
Ask yourselves whether you
are imposing a double stan-
dard on those who raise seri-
ous questions about anti-
Jewish stereotyping."
