Guarantees
In Danger

Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel
was warned by one of its
staunchest supporters in the
U.S. Senate this week that
its request for a $10 billion
U.S. loan guarantee to ab-
sorb new immigrants was in
danger.
According to Sen. Daniel
Inouye, D-Hawaii, many of-
ficials of the Bush ad-
ministration want to link
the loan guarantees to
Israel's suspension of set-
tlement-building in the ad-
ministered territories.
Mr. Inouye, who was in
Israel for a three-day visit,
made that point in a conver-
sation with Shimon Peres,
leader of the opposition
Labor Party.
Mr. Peres said that if the
guarantees were not for-
thcoming, enabling Israel to
secure commercial loans at
reasonable rates, life would
become much harder in
Israel, especially for new
olim.
Mr. Inouye, who chairs the
defense appropriations sub-
committee, said he and other
U.S. lawmakers are pledged
to make every effort to ob-
tain the guarantees.
Only last week, the sena-
tor blasted President Bush
for delaying action on the
loans. Addressing an Ameri-
can Israel Public Affairs
Committee dinner in Los
Angeles Dec. 10, Mr. Inouye
charged that the United
States is "a major cause of
Israel's economic ills."
He said Israel was an
excellent credit risk and all
it is asking from the United
States is to "extend the hand
of friendship."

Bodies Of Men
Found On Beach

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Military
authorities are trying to es-
tablish the identities of two
heavily armed men whose
bodies were found on a beach
south of Gaza this week.
It remains unclear who
sent them and how they
arrived. But the weapons
they carried left little doubt
that they were infiltrators
on their way to commit a
terrorist act but drowned
before they reached their
target, an Israel Defense
Force spokesman said.
The weapons found on the
bodies included two pistols,
100 rounds of ammunition
and 19 hand grenades.
Two Katyusha rockets
fitted with timers to fire
automatically were found
and safely defused.
