Do You Know
Mitzvah People
In Our Midst?
"That man deserves the highest honors who does
not ask for them, but performs worthy deeds."
Neil Kalef
"The most inspiring and
impressive aspect that Neil
Kalef's many accomplishments
have taught us is that our senior
years can be a time of giving,
renewal and vision, and service
to God, to Israel, to the
synagogue and to our fellow
man."
— Rabbi Morton Yolkut
Cong. B'nai David
From Chuck Pearistein, a 29-year-old who, despite his youth, inspires
people more than twice his age with a range of good deeds to Neil
Kalef, a vibrant octogenarian who tirelessly delivers meals to shut
ins, and assists psychiatric patients at Sinai Hospital . . . From Rae
Ann Sharfman, who has been at the forefront of the Soviet emigration
movement to David and Brian Ostreicher, 13- and 10-year-old
brothers who have spent the past three years befriending
developmentally disabled residents of the Frankel JARC home, Jews
have been performing significant acts of charity and kindness with
little or no fanfare.
To honor those Jews in our midst who, through unusual or
extraordinary acts of personal charity and kindness, touch the lives
of Jews and non-Jews in the metropolitan Detroit area, and in the
• hopes of having their actions inspire others in our community to
perform similar acts, The Jewish News will publish its fourth annual
Mitzvah Heroes special section.
We invite you to nominate a person or persons you may know for
this special honor. A panel of distinguished judges will select the
honorees, whose work will be featured in the special section.
Please fill out the form below, clip it, and return it with a description
of the acts of charity and kindness performed by the nominee. Attach
additional supporting information, if necessary. All nominations must
be received by Friday, January 24, 1992.
"Happy is the man whose deeds are greater than his learning."
