Sybaris Has
Art Jewelry

The Sybaris Gallery is ex-
panding to include art
jewelry. The gallery will show
contemporary jewelry in-
cluding brooches, earrings,
necklaces and collars ex-
ecuted from traditional
materials such as gold and
silver as well as unlikely
substances such as safety
pins, clothing snaps, formica, .
segmented wood and found
objects.
Arline Fisch uses textile
techniques to create neck-
laces, bracelets and pins. Ms.
Fisch machine-knits a varie-
ty of metals ranging from fine
silver to lightweight plastic-
covered copper.
Tina Fung Holder uses
traditional fiber techniques
and crochets together nearly
1200 pins to create necklaces.
Elizabeth Palmer works
with children's drawings, fan-
ciful images and whimsy to
create jewelry pieces. Some of
her figurative brooches have
stick arms and legs, cor-
kscrew scrawls of copper wire
for hair and smiles etched in
metal the way they were
drawn — squiggly and
uneven.
Heinz Brummel makes
jewelry in primary colors and
black and white. Starting
with metals, then adding
stones, enamel, beads, bone or
ivory, Mr. Brummel creates
pieces that are archetypal
and powerful.
James Carter combines
ideas drawn from a historical
awareness of forms with basic
metalsmithing techniques
such as enameling, gold and
silver fabrication, forging and
the use of semi-precious
stones.
The Sybaris Gallery is at
301 W. Fourth St., Royal Oak.
Hours are Tuesday-Saturday,
11 a.m.-5 p.m.
