Water Wanting
After Floods
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Three
days of record rainfall
brought temporary relief
from the water shortage but
was far from enough to erase
the ravages of chronic
drought in recent years, ex-
perts said.
Ten years of rainstorms of
equal intensity would be re-
quired to wipe out the deficit
of Israel's "water-bank," ac-
cording to Water Cominis-
sioner Dan Zaflasky and
Yaniv Naftali, a spokesman
for the Agriculture Ministry.
They pointed out that
while the recent downpour
increased by 9 inches the
level of Lake Kinneret, the
country's largest natural
reservoir, they would not
feel secure until the level
rises by 10 feet.
Israelis continued to clean
up the damage done by 72
hours of incessant rain, hail .
and lightning. But they have
still not found the bodies of
two soldiers, missing after
their truck was caught in a
flash flood in the Greater Tel
Aviv area.
The Israel Defense Force
identified them as Sgt. Maj.
Nathan Russo, 38, of Kfar
Sava and Cpl. Amir Shaki,
19, of Ramat Gan.
Meanwhile, Rabbi Levy
Yitzhak Halperin, director
of the Institute for Science
and Halacha in Jerusalem,
reported that a lightning
bolt struck the institute's
building in the Bayit VeGan
suburb, destroying its corn-
puter databank.
The rabbi called it "an act
of God."

Israel Claims
Against Iraq
Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel's
Foreign Ministry is collec-
ting material to support fi-
nancial claims against Iraq
for damage caused Israelis
by Scud missile attacks dur-
ing the Persian Gulf War.
The United Nations sug-
gested that countries begin
filing suits against Iraq on
behalf of their citizens.
But the ministry's legal
adviser, Roby Sabel, cau-
tioned the public not to sub-
mit individual claims for the
time being because the
preparatory work has only
just begun.
The U.N. Compensation
Commission, set up in
Geneva, urged Iraq to start
exporting oil within the
limits established by U.N.
resolutions in order to pro-
vide humanitarian services
to its own people.
