and opened a store, Meretsky Furniture. Meretsky continued to coach basketball at various levels. He led Windsor's Jewish Community Center to an Ontario championship. He also coached Gordon McGregor High School to pro- vincial honors. Since selling his store in 1980, Meretsky has wintered in Florida, so he no longer coaches. He does, however, still receive recognition for his Olympic achievement. Among the many honors the team received was induction into the Canadian Basketball Hall of Fame in 1981. Ironically, at the time of the induction, he had not yet received his silver medal. Meretsky explained that the Olympic Committee only made eight silver medals for the 14-man basketball squad, so he and five teammates were given bronze medals. In 1982 Meretsky's children - Ross, Warren and Lynn - had a duplicate silver medal made. They presented their father with his medal on his 70th birthday. Today, 55 years after his Olympic success, Meretsky says he is reminded of the Games more often- than he was in the '30s. And he re- mains justifiably proud. Par- ticipating in the Olympics, Meretsky says, was "a great honor. Imagine representing Canada at the Olympic Games. Not too many people reach that status." ❑ HOW MUCH SMARTER IS IT TO BUY HUGO BOSS AT THE NEW VAN DYKES IN SOUTHFIELD? A. NO SMARTER B. A LITTLE SMARTER C. 20% SMARTER (C.)
