history of welfare institu-
tions, agencies and ac-
tivities; Detroit Welfare
Federation; 1940; ppxvi
211."
Noteworthy is the fact
that it was published by the
Federation and the title was
reproduced in Yiddish in

Jewish Social Studies.

Here is the text of my re-
view:

Inasmuch as this book
concerns itself exclusively
with local institutions
such as the Jewish Wel-
fare Federation, the Jew-
ish Social Service Bureau
. . . it will unfortunately be
of little interest to readers
in other cities . . . There is,
on the other hand, no
mention of national
movements as they func-
tion in Detroit .. .
The history of Detroit
Jewry is rich in projects
of national interest; a
number of agricultural
settlement and other
movements started there
and this city has been and
still is the headquarters
for anti-Semitic organiza-
tions, but these are only
slightly touched upon.
Consequently, Mr.
Weinberg's book, which is
complete insofar as its
limited scope is concern-
ed, must be rated as of
value only to resident who
are keenly interested in
• Detroit's communal life.

That's how we retain
knowledge about a commun-
ity experience and a period
that had Yiddish predomi-
nant.
As this issue of The Jewish
News went to press, Sharon
Alterman, Jewish Federation
archivist, located the Samuel
Weinberg Yiddish history
brochure. It is good to know
that important documen-
taries will be preserved.

A Vital Lesson
For The Ignorant

When the University of
Michigan and Duke Univer-
sity newspaper editors, Jews
among them, published'paid
advertising denying the
Holocaust, there was insuffi-
cient and deplorable failure
at condemnation of them.
Even the freedom-of-
speech contention was for
approval of so much
outrageous lying that ap-
proval was a sinking into a
gutter of disgust.
The deeply moving "The
Horror and the Valor"
supplement in the Dec. 4
issue of the Detroit Free
Press demands compulsory
reading to prelient a spread
of the ignorance that causes
forgetfulness of what had oc-
curred.

Perhaps such compulsory
reading should be demanded
for all who apply for edito-
rial and reportorial positions
on university newspapers.
Learning the facts must also
be considered a duty for all
applicants for newspaper
positions everywhere.
The Free Press compilation
of facts is so deeply moving
that it provides material to
make a textbook reminding
us about the horror.
The facts assembled by the
Free Press merit deep grati-
tude for a contribution to
prevent repetition of the Big
Lie. It is especially
deplorable that this lesson
must now be taught 'to
fellow citizens in Ann Arbor,
whose editorial positions
permitted them to lend com-
fort to the "Big Liars." ❑

Envoy Speaks
On Problems

Washington (JTA) — Re-
cent expressions of anti-
Semitism in Romania are
confined to a few extremists
groups and individuals, the
Romanian ambassador to
the United States told'a Jew-
ish audience here last week.
The majority of "decent
normal Romanians" not
only ignore anti-Semitic
outbursts but condemn
them, Ambassador Virgil
Constantinescu asserted.
Speaking at luncheon in
the American Jewish Com-
mittee's Ambassador Forum
Luncheon Series, Mr. Con-
stantinescu said Romania's
20,000 Jews do not fear for
their safety.
Romanians have "always
lived with Jews like
brothers," he said, appear-
ing to ignore his country's
century-old record of anti-
Semitism, including a string
of major pogroms that began
in the 1800s and continued
until the 1940s.
Mr. Constantinescu said
he was personally disturbed
that the Romanian Parlia-
ment had recently voted to
rehabilitate Marshal Ion
Antonescu, its World War II
fascist dictator.
He said the only explana-
tion he could think of was
that since Mr. Antonescu
was executed on the orders
of the Soviet Union, the re-
habilitation was seen as a
way of telling the Soviets
that Romania no longer
takes orders from Moscow.
But he said the judgment
on Mr. Antonescu should be
left to historians, and
Parliament should focus on
bringing democracy and
economic well-being.

Chiropractic Health Hints

WITH DR. STANLEY LEVINE, D.C.

BEWARE OF MANIPULATION OF YOUR BACK
IF IT'S DONE BY THE WRONG KIND OF DOCTOR

Is all manipulation the same? Of course not..
Are all doctors trained to provide comprehensive chiropractic
services which include chiropractic diagnosis and procedure —
specifically the form of manipulation called "spinal adjustment?" No,
not at all.
Medical physicians and physical therapists are usually not trained
in chiropractic procedure, which is a specialty requiring years of special
schooling and internship. That's why you should seek out a qualified
doctor of chiropractic when you have a health problem that requires
manipulation of the spine.
Scientific studies done by medical sources comparing chiropractic care against medical
and physical therapy non-surgical care of the back and neck show that chiropractic pro-
cedure relieves chronic and severe pain, both immediate and long term, in half the time
it takes medical physicians (who are not trained in chiropractic procedure).
Manipulation is not only effective, but safe when done by a doctor of chiropractic.
