Duke, Buchanan
Alarm Loyalists

The candidacies of Mr.
Duke and the expected an-
nouncement that arch-
conservative . columnist Pat
Buchanan will also be a
GOP candidate are suddenly
rallying Jewish Republicans
to the banner of the presi-
dent.
"The presence of these
men has accelerated the
mobilization of Jewish
Republicans behind Bush in
the primaries," said a
leading Jewish Republican
activist. "Their presence
means we can't afford to sit
this one out because we have
had some problems with the
Bush administration."
Jewish Republicans and
party leaders are jointly de-
veloping strategies to keep
Mr. Duke from winning a
national forum at the party's
upcoming convention.
Jewish Republicans in
Maryland are particularly
interested in getting an ear-
ly start in fighting the Loui-
sianan's candidacy. Their
state's primary will be the
first contest pitting Mr.
Duke against President
Bush.
But the Jewish GOP ac-
tivists privately argue that
Mr. Buchanan is a more se-
rious threat because of his
strong financial foundation.
They say the best way to
counter Mr. Buchanan's
challenge is to press hard for
a decisive victory for the
president in the early
primaries.

Cuban Jews
Seek U.S. Aid

Few groups are more
isolated from the main-
stream of Jewish life than
the 900-member Jewish
community in Fidel Castro's
Cuba, the world's last bas-
tion of communist or-
thodoxy.
That was the message
offered by Moises Asis, the
leader of the Cuban Jewish
community. Mr. Asis was in
Washington last week as
guest of the Union of Ameri-
can Hebrew Congregations.
"We would like closer con-
tact with the Jewish com-
munity in the United
States," he said. "You are a
large community, and you
are very near. But it's hard,
if not impossible."
Specifically, the Cuban
Jews' are looking for ways to
help them cope with an
intermarriage rate of more
than 90 percent. According
to Mr. Asis, Cuban Jews
neded more educational
supplies. ❑
