Benjamin Safir,
Attorney

Benjamin J. Safir, of South-
field, died Dec. 4. He was 86.
Born in McKeesport, Penn.,
Mr. Safir was an attorney in
Detroit for more than 64
years. A 1927 graduate of the
University of Michigan
School of Law, he was a
member of the school's law
review staff and was one of
the founders of the U-M Thu
Epsilon Rho Law Society. He
was a member of the U-M
Alumni Association and of
Congregation Shaarey Zedek
and its men's club.
Mr. Safir is survived by his
wife, Ethel; sons and
daughter-in-law, Lloyd and
Linda Weston of Chicago, Ill.;
Rafael Weston of Alamosa,
Colo.; daughter and son-in-
law, Merle and Michael Fa-
jans of Berkeley, Calif.;
sisters, Jeanette Myers of
Southfield, Elsie Snyder of
Southfield; eight grand-
children.

Edith Frank,
Active In Groups

Edith Selker Frank, of Far-
mington Hills, died Dec. 9.
She was 82.
A dental hygienist, she was
a 5th-generation member of
Congregation Shaarey Zedek,
past president of the Resettle-
ment Service of Jewish Fami-
ly Service, past president of
the Detroit chapter of the

American Jewish Congress,
and national vice president of
the AJCongress. She was also
on the board of governors of
the Jewish Federation, a life
member of Hadassah, a board
member of the Jewish Com-
munity Council and vice
president of the Jewish Voca-
tional Service.
She leaves her daughter
and son-in-law, Maida and
Robert Portnoy of Bloomfield
Hills; sister, Margaret of
Cleveland, Ohio; two grand-
children.

Max Biber,
Businessman

Max Biber, of Bingham
Farms, died Dec. 8 He was 79.
Mr. Biber was president
from 1940-1962 of the Auto
City Oil Co. He was past
president of B'nai B'rith
Tikvah Lodge and Yeshiva
Beth Yehudah, and past vice
president of Adat Shalom
Synagogue. He also served as
chairman of the Correction
Commission of the State of
Michigan.
He is survived by his wife,
Pearl; sons and daughters-in-
law, David and Cathleen of
Birmingham, Daniel and
Irene of Huntington Woods;
daughter and son-in-law,
Susan and Jack Bindes of
Bloomfield Hills; sister,
Matilda Brandwine of Bever-
ly Hills, Mich.; five grand-
children; two great-grand-
sons.

Emphasis On Hebrew
For Ethiopian Olim

Sixty percent of the 14,000
Ethiopian Jews who arrived
in Israel this year are under
the age of 18. Some 6,000 are
school-age and will begin
classes this fall with other
Israeli children.
In order to house the Ethio-
pian arrivals, new mobile-
home parks were established
and approximately 40 hotels

were converted into tem-
porary absorption centers.

The considerable number of
children created a distinct
challenge for the Jewish
Agency, the organization
funded primarily by the
United Jewish Appeal-
Federation Operation Exodus
Campaign.
