The Jewish Community Center
. with Nancy Gurwin Productions presents

On the lobby door is a pro-
minent brass mezuzah, and
the display of crafted items
near the reception desk in-
cludes a seder plate. And
when patrons sit down to Fri-
day night dinner in the
Crystal Room, the inn's res-
taurant, they often find home-
made chicken soup on the
menu, prepared by Atlas
owner Ruth Satt.
"I also make kugel for the
Italian brunch that we have
on Sunday. And when people
ask, 'What's this?' I tell them,
`It's the Jewish version of
Italian pasta,' " says Mrs.
Satt, the only Cape May resi-
dent with a license plate that
reads "Chutzpah."
It took chutzpah, indeed, to
open an inn in 1971 when she
and her late husband Harry
had no experience at all as
innkeepers.
Both survivors of the Nazis,
they emigrated to the United
States from Eastern Europe
in 1950. After living in
Brooklyn briefly, they bought
a chicken farm in Corbin Ci-
ty, 20 miles from Cape May.
Then they started their own
barbecue chicken take-out
business — and then launch-
ed another new venture, open-
ing the 93 room Atlas in Cape
May.
Over the years, it has
hosted its share of Jewish
tourists. Hadassah and Miz-
rachi groups have stayed here
and so have families who
bring their own kosher foods.
"When Jewish organiza-
tions come, I serve only dairy
food," says Mrs. Satt, a
member of Temple Beth
Judah and a life member of
Hadassah. She also serves as
chairman of United Jewish
Appeal for Cape May.
Even when Jewish groups
are not booked at the Atlas,
there's ethnic food in abun-
dance. Sometimes Mrs. Satt
will make homemade gefilte
fish as a welcome to regulars
who come every year. The
Sunday brunches in the
Crystal Room include bagels
and lox, whitefish and kugel.
Right next door to the Atlas
is another Jewish-owned inn.
The Montreal was started 25
years ago by Harry Satt's
cousin Harry Hirsch and his
wife Sophie, who were both
Holocaust survivors and also
began life in New Jersey as
chicken farmers.
"They happened to purchase
a piece of land at auction and
decided to build a hotel," ex-
plains their son, Larry.
Their 70-room inn, like the
Atlas, has a Jewish- ambiance.
"On Friday nights, when you
walk by, you'll always see two
Shabbat candles lit in the
window near Beach Drive.
That's my father's apart-
