Avi Weiss Disrupts
Duke's Forum

R

abbi Avi Weiss,
known for dramatic
expressions of his re-
ligious and political beliefs,
did not disappoint his ad-
mirers during a swing
through Washington last
week.
Originally, the controver-
sial New York activist had
planned to focus on the Mid-
dle East peace talks — and
on what he views as Ameri-
can's abandonment of Israel.
But while picketing the
State Department on
Wednesday, Rabbi Weiss
learned that former hate
group leader David Duke
was about to announce at
the National Press Club that
he would challenge Presi-
dent George Bush in the
Republican primaries.
What followed was predic-
table to those who know
Rabbi Weiss.
"This man is so
dangerous," he said, "that I
just knew in my soul that I
could not be silent. I did not
want to scream at him. I
knew that would not work,
so I just stood in a corner (at
the press club) and held up a
sign that said, 'David Duke,
Nazi of the 90's.' "
Rabbi Weiss began work-
ing his way to the front of
the room in the club, where
Mr. Duke was holding a
press conference.
Finally, the rabbi, who is
not known for his timidity,
walked onto the stage and
held his sign a few inches
from the candidate's face.
Photos of the encounter ap-
peared the next day in
several major newspapers.

Rabbi Weiss, who was
roughly ejected by Mr.
Duke's bodyguards, said he
had intended to remind
voters about the neo-Nazi
past beneath Mr. Duke's
glossy exterior — and to
galvanize a Jewish commun-
ity that, he said, has not
taken the Duke threat seri-
ously enough.
"If you cave in to a bigot,
you inspire only greater
bigotry, " he said.
"Wherever this man goes,
we have to remind America
what this man really is."

OU Prepares
For Guarantees

How do you change the
mind of a very stubborn and
angry president?
You do it one step at a
time, say Jewish groups
working to build a solid base
of support for Israel's re-
quest for $10 billion in loan
guarantees from the U.S.
That strategy was much in
evidence last week when the
Union of Orthodox Jewish
Congregations of America
(OU) entertained some key
Republican legislators.
The guarantees were offi-
cially proposed in
September, but deferred
when President Bush
signaled his intention to link
them to Israel's settlements
policies.
The OU urged Sen. Don
Nickles, Ok., Rep. Bill Pax-
on, N.Y., and Rep. Bill
Green, N.Y., to work with
their colleagues to build
support for guarantees.
