ADL Attacks
Revisionist Ads
New York — The Anti-
Defamation League called on
college newspapers "to reject
advertising that denies the
reality of the Holocaust."
The ads, which recently ap-
peared in at least three col-
lege newspapers, were placed
by Bradley Smith, head of the
Visalia, Calif.-based Commit-
tee for Open Debate on the
Holocaust (CODOH). To date,
the ads have been run in the
Michigan Daily (University of
Michigan), the Chronicle,
(Duke University), and the
Cornell Daily Sun. Those col-
lege newspapers which re-
jected the ad include: the Dai-
ly Pennsylvanian (University
of Pennsylvania), the Har-
vard Crimson, the Daily
Targum (Rutgers), the Daily
Cardinal (Wisconsin), the
Brown Daily Herald, the Yale
Daily News, the Daily Califor-
nian (University of Califor-
nia), and the Daily Bruin
(UCLA).
Abraham Foxman, ADL's
national director, said: "No
college newspaper should run
these blatantly false ads.
Newspapers have the right to
accept or reject any advertise-
ment that they deem distaste-
ful or bigoted. Advertise-
ments that deny the
Holocaust represent the worst
kind of anti-Semitism."
Mr. Foxman pointed out
that Holocaust revisionists
have intensified their efforts
since David Duke's unsuc-
cessful campaign for governor
of Louisiana. Mr. Duke has
been an outspoken denier of
the reality of the Holocaust.
"By accepting these ads,
college newspapers are pro-
moting patently fraudulent
propaganda — not unlike the
`big lie' used by Hitler," the
ADL leader said. "We urge all
college newspapers to act
responsibly and reject ads
that serve no purpose but to
promote hatred."
The Committee for Open
Debate on the Holocaust was
established in 1987 by Smith
and Mark Weber, a former
member of the neo-Nazi Na-
tional Youth Alliance. Mr.
Weber is also editor of the
newsletter of the Institute for
Historical Review and a fre-
quent contributor to its
journal.
Besides the ad campaign,
ADL has learned that Mr.
Smith has also attempted to
promote the Holocaust revi-
sionist line on radio stations
by announcing his availabili-
ty as a talk show guest.
