Central Asian Artifacts

Bunting Gallery
Focuses On Asia

The Bunting East/West
Gallery will mount an exhibi-
tion focusing on the art and
artifacts of the Central Asian
nomadic and urban cultures,
through Jan. 21.
The influences of nomadic
herdsmen, invading armies,
peaceful traders, and urban
dwellers have all been absorb-
ed and intermingled to pro-
duce an artistic style that is
exquisite and unique. The
Central Asian peoples have
known periods of great
wealth and culture, and have
produced a rich heritage of or-
namental and practical items.
Even well into this century,
nearly all clothing and
decorative textiles, jewelry,
carpets, furniture and wooden
or clay utensils were hand-
crafted using natural
materials with a wonderful
variety of patterns and colors.
The majority of pieces in-
cluded in this showing date
from 40 to 100 years old, with
major source areas in
Afghanistan and the Swat
Valley. Uzbek, Turkmen,
Kazak, and Balouch cultures
are also represented. All
areas of craft are included,
but a special emphasis has
been placed on silver jewelry
and textiles.
Normal gallery hours are
Tuesday, Wednesday and
Saturday 11-6; Thursday and
Fr _ iday 11-8.
A portion of the profits from
this exhibition will be
donated to organizations pro-
viding shelter and assistance
to homeless children.
