government-surplus type-
writer. I sat down and started
putting out press releases
saying, 'If you have old books
lying around, send them in, "
Mr. Lansky related in an in-
terview in Time magazine.
Much has changed since
those early days. Now, nearly
100 volunteers do most of the
collecting, and the center still
gets about 600 books every
week. Mr. Lansky is still on
the road, but much farther
afield than he can go in a van.
For example, he's been to
Russia, Latvia, Lithuania
and Estonia, to distribute
Yiddish books wherever
they're needed.
The founder, who once took
a summer job as a migrant
blueberry picker to earn
money for his project, went on
to win a MacArthur Founda-
tion award of $225,000 in
1989. Now he heads an
organization with 8,000
members from around the
world.
For the Jewish traveler to
Amherst, visiting the Na-
tional Yiddish Book Center's
headquarters is not only a
way to get information about
the many activities of the
center, but also to see a con-
crete example of how one
young man's mission evolved
into a unique cultural
institution.
Moreover, it seems ap-
propriate that the National
Yiddish Book Center is
located in a town which not
only has a rich literary tradi-
tion itself, but also a thriving
Jewish life. ❑

the National Yiddish Book
Center is headquartered.
Founded by Aaron Lansky
in 1980, the center is
dedicated to the rescue of Yid-
dish books. These books are
collected, restored and often
returned to circulation. To
date, the center has collected
almost one million books. It's
now the world's largest sup-
plier of out-of-print Yiddish
books.
It's also the unofficial
capital of Yiddish literary life.
Not only does the center col-
lect books, but it also runs an
adult education seminar, stu-
dent intern program, summer
Yiddish program for adults,
and it's also starting year-
round residential courses for
adults, developing a speakers'
program and taping novels in
Yiddish, using Yiddish-
speaking actors in Israel.
Book collecting is still the
heart of its mission. Besides
its offices in Amherst, it
maintains an annex in near-
by Holyoke. Here, in a
renovated paper factory, over
700,000 Yiddish books col-
lected by the center are
stored. Others have been sold
to institutions all over the
world and to private scholars.
All of this was begun by
Aaron Lansky, who was rais-
ed in New Bedford and did not
learn Yiddish until he was a
college student. That's when
he started to collect books on
his own, visiting the homes of
elderly Jews and driving
around in borrowed or rented
vans and storing the books in
his parents' house.
