STOP BREAK-INS A Burglar Alarm At A Price You Can Afford! Choir Debuts In Capital Washington (JTA) — "I love coffee; I love tea; I love the Java jive, and it loves me. Coffee and tea, and Java and me." Those are the lyrics to one of the songs performed last week by the Soviet Union's only professional Jewish choir for a congressional au- dience that included Sen. Frank Lautenberg, D- N.J., and Reps. Mervyn Dymally, D-Calif., Benjamin Gilman, R-N.Y., Sander Levin, D- Mich., and Lawrence Smith, D-Fla. The concert, held in the Rayburn Foyer of the Rayburn Building, was co- sponsored by the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee and the National Conference on Soviet Jewry. It was billed as a "thank you" concert to lawmakers for helping secure emigra- tion freedom for Soviet Jews. In addition to "Java Jive," popularized by the American singing group Manhattan Transfer, the JDC Moscow Synagogue Choir's reper- toire includes traditional Russian songs and Jewish liturgical music. The all- Jewish, 20-member singing group, currently on its maiden, 10-city U.S. tour, was recruited in 1988 by JDC through advertising on Soviet television and in newspapers. The choir was featured in the Soviet Union in September on a nationally televised memorial concert for the three young men slain during the failed August coup. The choir members appeared in tux- edos and yarmulkes (skullcaps). Vladimir Kraitman, a soloist with the choir, said he learned "Java Jive" last summer in Elmira, N:Y., where he was performing at a musical tribute to Mark Twain. Mr. Kraitman, 39, who holds a bachelor's degree in music — with a specialty in voice — from the Gorky Con- servatory, said that when he returned to Moscow, he taught "Java Jive" to every- one else. Boris Voinov, also a soloist with the group, was a prac- ticing physician who _quit to join the JDC choir. He was among the 20 selected out of 35 singers who auditioned. Mr. Voinov, whose hobby is folk singing, had sung Jewish folk songs in the Soviet Union prior to the opening up of Soviet society in recent years. $39500 • a Completely Installed , Metro Detroit's newest old bank is still the best! • FREE ESTIMATES • • IN BUSINESS SINCE 1971 • DEAL DIRECT WITH OWNER Interest rates as of 11-27-91 Quality Burglar Protection Company 17348 W. 12 Mile in Southfield 559.1540 *Includes Keypad, Siren, Motion Detector.
