Monday December 9 completed his ninth season as Albion coach. "He rarely gets a direct hit. Most are glancing shots. He also has great field vision, he's strong, dedicated, well-prepared and he's durable. He never missed a game here." Wineman knows why he's so slippery and how he stayed injury-free at Albion. "I understand my limita- tions," he said. "I'm not going to run head-on into a guy to try to get yardage unless I have to do that. I'm going to try to get around him to avoid being hit." Wineman played on the varsity football team at Berkley for three years, ear- ning All-Southeastern Michigan Association honors at defensive back as a senior. On offense that season, he split the rushing duties in the Bears' wishbone attack. Ironically, Wineman's foot- ball career barely got off the ground when he was a seventh-grader at Berkley's Norup Middle School. In- spired by his older brother Rob Wineman (who was two grades ahead of him and also later was an All-SMA per- former at Berkley), Hank wanted to play at Norup. "But I was having my bar mitzvah in the spring and go- ing to Hebrew school two days a week, so I really didn't have the time to play football," he related. "I was able to play a little bit in the last three games, however. I think that's when I fell in love with the game." Besides leaving his mark on the Albion football program, Wineman will depart from the school with a. degree in history. A 3.2 grade-point average student, Wineman wants to attend law school after graduation. "I found out here that I'm a fairly decent student," Wineman said. "I think that's because I've had the benefit of small classes. You can go to the teachers if you're having problems and sometimes they'll go to you. I would have been lost in the shuffle in a big college." Wineman has been im pressed with the level of com- petition in MIAA football: "No one is on scholarship, so everyone- is playing for the love of the game. It's true foot- ball." It's- also true that Wine- man's gridiron career pro- bably is over now that Al- bion's season has come to an end. "That's kind of frightening knowing I won't be getting ready for another season next August," he said. "It'll be a real bummer. I've had a great time playing this game. I've met the best people and made many good friends." 0 Bowling Scores B'NAI B'RITH MEN Ben Lusky, Traveling Howie Gerenraich 243-237/856, Jery Gottlieb 242, Wayne Lusky 237-235/836, Cy Rott 235-230-216-202/883, Len Berger 221, Mort Friedman 220, Steve Kendler 219, Clem Baggleman 216, Allan Zupke 215.
