tics. Some are so en-
amored with them, in
fact, that they have no in-
terest in the people behind
the numbers.
Hank Wineman's stats are
staggering. Just as im-
pressive, however, is the per-
son who rewrote the Albion
College football record book.
Just ask Coacii. Pete Schmidt
about his recently-named
All-American.
"Hank is as fine a role
model as we've had on our
campus in a long time and
certainly in the 20 years I've
been coaching football,"
Schmidt said about the senior
tailback from Huntington
Woods, who was one of the
Britons' four captains this
season.
"He's very unselfish . . .
Hank will do anything for
anybody," Schmidt explained.
"He's also humble, has high
ethics and is honest. What I
enjoy most about Hank is he's
always smiling. He loves life.
Ha'nk's parents (Henry and
Trudi Wineman) should be
very proud of him."
You could almost feel Wine-
man blushing over the phone
from Albion when his coach's
comments were related to
him.
"Well, I guess I am happy-
go-lucky," he said. "I'm

always smiling. I've been that
way since I was a kid. I also
get really hyper once in a
while and that drives the
guys in our fraternity house
crazy?'
Wineman drove opposing
defensive players batty dur-
ing the four years he was on
the Albion team after
graduating from Berkley
High School in 1988.
After seeing little action as
a freshman and sophomore,
Wineman burst on the scene
as a junior.
He rushed for 100 or more
yards in all nine regular-
season games during both his
junior and senior years, set-
ting an NCAA Division II
record for consecutive con-
tests at or over the century
mark. The old standard of 16
was established during the
1981 and 1982 campaigns by
Scott Reppart of Lawrence,
Wis.
This year, Wineman led the
Britons to their third straight
Michigan Intercollegiate
Athletic Association (MIAA)
championship and their first
Division III playoff . berth
since 1985 by rushing for a
national-best 1,629 yards. He
averaged an amazing 181
yards per game and 5.3 yards
each time he carried the ball.
Wineman scored 16
touchdowns — 14 rushing and
two receiving. Altogether, the
MIAA's Most Valuable Player
on offensive grabbed 11

passes for 106 yards, a 9.6 per
catch average. His longest
run was 68 yards; his best
reception was for 26 yards. Al-
bion finished 8-0-1 overall in
the regular season; the
Britons were 4-0-1 in the
MIAA.
Want more eye-popping
statistics? Wineman's 3,010
career rushing yards are the
most in Albion football
history, which dates back to
1884. The old mark of 2,415
was set by Dexter Davis from
1976-79.
Wineman's 37 total touch-
downs and 34 rushing TDs
also rank him No. 1 on the Al-
bion career charts. The
former rushing record of 27
was held by J.B. Elzy, who
tallied those touchdowns from
1960-63.
Oh, yes. Wineman's 250
yards on the ground at
Lawrence, Wis. on Oct. 5 also
set a team record. His perfor-
mance in Albion's 41-0 vic-
tory broke one of the oldest
marks in the record book: 248
yards by Bob Wikstrom
against Hillsdale in 1952,
long before the 21-year-old
Wineman was born.
There's more. Wineman ac-
complished all this despite be-
ing one of the smallest
players on the field. He's
5-foot-7 and weighs 170
pounds.
"Hank has an amazing
