B'nai B'rith
Sells Building

STAFF REPORT

T

he local building that
houses B'nai B'rith's
offices is changing
hands. The Michigan B'nai
B'rith Hillel Fund, a non-
profit corporation set up to
endow B'nai B'rith and
Hillel activities throughout
the state, sold the Southfield
Road building to Garmo &
Garmo, a law firm, on Nov.
15.
The building, which had
been donated to B'nai B'rith
in the late 70's, was sold for
$300,000. David Bittker,
who managed the building
for B'nai B'rith, said the
building was a mildly
profitable investment, but
his involvement in other
B'nai B'rith activities re-
stricted him from continuing
his role as the building's
manager.
When one of the building's
tenants, Ashland Oil Co.,
notified Mr. Bittker of their
intention to move out, Mr.
Bittker recommended to
B'nai B'rith that they seek a
buyer.
"Everything fell into place
at the right time," he said.
But, he added, B'nai B'rith's
offices, plus those of its
Foundation and the Cove-
nant Credit Union, will re-
main as tenants to the law
firm. Plus, he said, the sale
was not motivated by a need
to shore up the group's fi-
nances. ❑

Late Rains
Bring Flooding

Jerusalem (JTA) — The
most violent rainstorms in
more than 30 years have
been lashing Israel since last
week, causing severe floods,
widespread damage and
probable casualties.
Two Israel Defense Force
soldiers were reported miss-
ing after their truck was
swept into a river near
Ramla. A third soldier was
rescued.
Naval units were called to
rescue stranded people in
the port city of Ashdod. The
main highway north to Tel
Aviv was partially under
water and closed to traffic.
For a country afflicted by
drought, the torrents were
welcome despite the havoc
they caused.
Farmers were encouraged
as Lake Kinneret, Israel's
largest natural reservoir,
rose 11 inches.

BEYOND PERFECTION.
