and he will tell them what he
thinks," Mr. Teevens says.
"Anyone he has encouraged
to go on professionally, they
end up playing professional-
ly." Others, Mr. Teevens says,
have tried but failed despite
warnings from Mr. Bistritzky
that they did not have the re-
quisite skills. "And they
generally come back to say
they wish they had listened."
He's a very accurate judge. He
does not wish to be deceptive
about musical talent."
Mr. Bistritzky says his
ultimate goal is to instill in
his students a long-term ap-

complishments of the musical
masters. "With my students,"
Mr. Bistritzky says, "I always
try to make sure they unders-
tand how secondary they are.
I used to tell my students at
Cass that they don't matter, I
don't matter. Even the great
conductor Toscanini doesn't
matter because without
Brahms, without Bach, he
would have to conduct in a
spaghetti house.
"I will always say that the
best definition of education
and culture is to know what
is first class and second class.
To appreciate Bach, to ap-
preciate the great masters, re-

does not come simply because
you would have six months of
music appreciation courses in
school."
Born a Jew, Mr. Bistritzky
says he is personally discon-

self in the spiritual qualities
that inspire a particular corn-
position. "I am very, very free
from any national or religious
affiliations . . . but when the
music demands it, I enter the
religious aspects of the music
on an artistic level. Because
the music suggests a neces-
sary emotional content.
"My parents were very, very
vague religiously. And
throughout my adolescence it
was fashionable in Russia in
the '20s and '30s to be discon-
nected from religious expres-
