several trips downstairs to
take it all to the freezer.
Mrs. Jacobovitz is usually
done by 10:30 p.m., but not
always. It's about this time
her husband arrives from
Machon L'Torah.
Though Rabbi
Jacobovitz, too, has been on
the job all day, "If he comes
in at 10:30 and I'm still
working, he'll help out."
Mrs. Jacobovitz prepares
the challah and chicken on
Friday morning. One fav-
orite and easy recipe is to
cook chicken in duck sauce
and ketchup.
Mrs. Jacobovitz regularly
makes 10 loaves of challah,
which she insists is "just a
20-minute job." It takes 15
minutes to mix the ingre-
dients and knead the
dough, another two
minutes to punch down
after the dough has risen,
then a few more minutes to
form the loaves.
By Friday afternoon the
food is cooked and the
house is cleaned. The seven
Jacobovitz children set the
table and get dressed for
Shabbat. One hour before
sunset, everything is
ready. "Then we can
relax," Mrs. Jacobovitz
says.
At the end of the meal
everybody helps clear, in
large part because her
husband sets the example,
Mrs. Jacobovitz says.
Mrs. Jacobovitz's best
advice for Shabbat prepa-
ration: "Plan and be

organized," she says.
"That's why I'm always
making lists."
Just about everybody
else in the world is asleep
when Goldie Silverstein's
day begins. She rises each
morning at 5 a.m. when the
sky is still dark and her
Southfield neighborhood is
quiet.
With a full-time job at
Bais Yaakov and six chil-
dren, Mrs. Silverstein has
no time to waste. She
begins her Shabbat prepa-
rations on Monday.
The Boy Scouts believe in
being prepared. Mrs.
Silverstein's motto:
"Always plan ahead."
By Monday — Tuesday at
the latest — Mrs. Silvers-
tein has ready her menus
and shopping list for the
Shabbat meals. "I like to
know that by Wednesday
I've got the goods in the
house," she explains.
Wednesday shopping
does not mean leisurely
afternoon strolls down
grocery store aisles. Mrs.
Silverstein's best friends
are stores open long past
9:30 when her children
have gone to bed.
Thursday evening is for
cooking kugels and desserts
and relishes. But chicken
soup or challah made that
day? Don't even suggest it.
Mrs. Silverstein may cut
the vegetables for the soup
in advance, but cooking is
reserved for Friday after-
noon. And she has been
