known to make her challah
dough at 7 p.m. Thursday,
wake up at 2 a.m. to punch
it down, 4:30 a.m. to braid
it and 6 a.m. to bake it.
"Rising early doesn't
bother me at all," says
Mrs. Silverstein, who
usually survives on about
four hours' sleep.
Mrs. Silverstein says she
eschews frozen and canned
goods because she grew up
in a home where fresh food
was always served. "And,
we always had company
and my mother worked
from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.,"
she says.
Today, Mrs. Silverstein
continues to use many of
her mother's recipes. Her
only cooking rule: keep it
simple.
One of her favorite
chicken recipes: cook meat
in equal parts Thousand
Island dressing, apricot
jam and onion soup mix at
350 degrees for an hour
and a half. Another
Silverstein tradition:
chicken coated with Italian
dressing and bread crumbs.
But don't look for these
dishes every Friday night.
The Indiana Jones of
Southfield, Mrs. Silvers-
tein believes in adventure.
"I love to experiment,"
she says. "You have to be
daring in this world. Do I
try new recipes? Always.
"Usually things work out
fine. Only one time I made
a new dessert, and I knew
something was wrong right
away. All the people eating
it took one bite, then put
their spoons down.
Her children do not cook,
Mrs. Silverstein said. But
each child is obligated to
answer the question,
"What have you done to
help get ready for
Shabbat?" — which means
one helps clean, another
runs an errand.
Though Mrs. Silverstein
is organized, in part be-
cause "I live by the list,"
some last-minute errands
are often necessary. It's her
husband who has this
responsibility, she says.
After work Friday, Mrs.
Silverstein does her final
cooking and works with
her children to make sure
the house is clean. Soon,
her husband comes home
and prepares the candles.
In just a moment, Shabbat
will begin. ❑
