yeshiva in Jerusalem and is
now an international organ-
ization committed to Jewish
education and outreach.
The material has already
been presented to more than
1,000 people in Jerusalem,
Los Angeles and Toronto.
Audiences of Common
Ground are briefed on Arab
and Israeli positions and
presented with original texts
and documents. With assis-
tance of seminar leaders,
participants assume the
various roles, interact and
seek to resolve the conflict.
The second stage of the
seminar presents data from
Israeli and American
defense experts and uses ac-
tual maps and charts of ter-
ritories to examine the State
of Israel's security.
"The seminar is not polit-

ically aligned and is non-
official and non-
governmental," said Mr.
Tonkin, originally from
Detroit. "Topics are examin-
ed from left, right and center
perspectives."
Rabbi Alon Tolwin, direc-
tor of educational program-
ming, said the seminar is a
natural project for Aish
Ha'Torah to adopt. "As with
all our programs, we believe
in applying a systematic ap-
proach to issues of Judaism.
We provide the information
for students to distill and
they make up their own
minds."
Mr. Tonkin, who recently
moved his family from
Florida, will work with
Rabbi Tolwin in coor-
dinating and developing
programming.

Lubavitch Campus
Is Inching Forward

ichigan Lubavitch
has moved another
step in the long pro-
- cess of gaining approval
from West Bloomfield
Township for its proposed
Campus of Living Judaism.
On Nov. 26, the township
planning commission voted,
6-2, to allow the organiza-
tion to revise and present a
conceptual site plan, rather
than a detailed site plan, at
its next meeting, Dec. 10.
During a four-hour
meeting Nov. 26, commis-
sioners discussed every pro-

posed building in detail, said
Rabbi Yitzchak Kagan of the
Lubavitch Foundation. "The
architects will re-draw the
plan for the third time,"
Rabbi Kagan said. "But the
changes they asked for are
minor."
The township and
Lubavitch have been
discussing the proposed syn-
agogue-rabbinical seminary
complex west of the Jewish
Community Center for more
than two years. One stumbl-
ing block has been some
planning commissioners' in-
sistence that a complete site ,
plan be drawn, including
buildings that may not be
constructed for many years.
Lubavitch has asked for
conceptual approval now,
with site plans for each
building being brought back
to the commission in the
future.
If the project is - approved
by the planning commission,
it must still win final ap-
proval from the township
board.
