• Know that breaking a
pattern is tough. You may

feel insecure and anxious
until you create paths to
healthier relationships. This
will take time and effort, so
think of the sunshine after
the storm.
• Stop blaming others.
Sure, they may be at fault.
But why exhaust your
energy and hinge your hap-
piness on someone else when
you can only change
yourself? Also, look in the
mirror. Some people pursue
or provoke relationship
problems because they fear
commitment, distrust in-
timacy or desire drama and
chaos.
• Pursue your own goals
and interests. Giving them
up for another can be a key
source of bitterness and re-
sentment. You don't have to
do everything together.
However, if you share no in-
terests, try to meet new
people.
• Have realistic expecta-
tions of yourself and others.
You can't turn some toads
into princes, no matter how
many times you kiss them.
And don't think that if she
really loved you, she'd be
more responsible, punctual
or thrifty. Learn to laugh off
the little things. But don't
compromise your principles.
For after the honeymoon
phase, neither partner will
be happy.
• Find partners who don't
need fixing. Do you think
your love will heal them?
Get real. Do you feel obli-
gated to help? Don't date
them. Drive them to thera-
py. And instead of settling
for the next "same
type/different man" — oth-
erwise known as "someone
new" — look for the right
people in the right places.
You deserve to find ful-
fillment in your relation-
ships. If you feel stuck in a
relationship rerun, know
that you have the ability to
change the channel. ❑
