The congregation now in-
cludes 300 families, who
welcome visitors to their ser-
vices. "Our congregation is
very open and welcoming,"
says Rabbi Weinberg. "And
we do get many visitors,
because of all the colleges in
the area."
The response from visitors
is enthusiastic. "They're ex-
cited about the association
with Emily Dickinson and
her family, and also that a
former church is now a
synagogue in a town where
there were so few Jews," says
the rabbi. "They're surprised
to find such an active Jewish
community in this area."
Indeed, the small congrega-
tion has been steadily
flourishing. It was founded
only 20 years ago, after
Jewish residents of Amherst
organized themselves into a
community. By the late
1970s, they were ready to ac-
quire their own synagogue.
Then, in the early 80s, they
also established their own
cemetery seven miles from
town. Two years ago, they
hired Rabbi Weinberg as their
first full-time rabbi.
"So this is really a new
Jewish community where
there was once none," says
Rabbi Weinberg.
The building at 388 North
Pleasant Street, one block
from the University of
Massachusetts campus, is the
center of another Jewish com-
munity and a unique one. The
university's Hillel House is
not only a meeting place for
Jewish students — who now
are about 18 percent of the
total student population —
but also a residence for 26
students, who live on the
third floor of the house. "This
is the only Hillel House in the
country with a Jewish living
community," says Rabbi Saul
Perlmutter, director.
Inside the building, besides
the living quarters, there are
varied facilities, including a
lounge, library and the
Center for Jewish Studies.
"The level of student in-
volvement in Jewish ac-
tivities is very high," says
Rabbi Perlmutter. Because of
the quality of programs the
Hillel House provides, it has
won three Haber awards from
the B'nai B'rith Hillel
Association, in 1980, 1985
and 1989. The three plaques
are displayed in a trophy case.
Another award-winning
Jewish cultural institution is
not far from Hillel House. In
a century-old former brick
schoolhouse just four blocks
from Emily Dickinson's home,
