Special to The Jewish News

I

n some ways, Amherst is
a typical New England
town, with tree-lined
streets, a town Common, col-
onial architecture and a tran-
quil ambiance.
But it's much more thali
merely typical. This small
Massachusetts town 70 miles
from Boston and 20 miles
from the Vermont border has
an impressive literary
heritage. Emily Dickinson
wrote her poetry in a house at
280 Main Street, where she
lived for most of her life.
Robert Frost, Noah Webster
and other writers also lived in
Amherst.
What's more, Amherst is
quite a college town. It is
home to no less than three
colleges: Amherst College,
Hampshire College and the
University of Massachusetts.
Smith College and Mount
Holyoke are nearby.
But that's not all. For the
Jewish traveler, the town has
special attractions, which in-
clude a flourishing Jeirish
congregation, an award-
winning Hillel House and a
unique Jewish cultural
institution.
A visit to the Jewish Com-
munity of Amherst, 142 Main
Street, is an appropriate first
stop for a Jewish tour. Just a
15 minute walk from the
town Common, the syna-
gogue is an impressive sight: -

a white clapboard building
dominated by a tall steeple,
which is topped by an acorn
finial.
It looks like a church — and
indeed that's what it was
originally. Completed in 1839
and designed by Amherst ar-
tist Colonel Warren Howland,
the Greek Revival-style
building was a Congrega-
tional church. But now, the
sign outside the building
clearly announces: Jewish
Community of Amherst.
"The congregation purchas-
ed the building 14 years ago,"

.

The town has an
award-winning
Hillel House and a
unique Jewish
cultural institution.

says Rabbi Sheila Weinberg.
When they acquired it, they
were careful to preserve it.
"We have everything just as
it was — the organ, the anti-
que brass fixtures, the
wooden pews — all are
original," says the rabbi.
So are the vividly colored
windows, which visitors often
notice. They are original win-
dows that once belonged to
Emily Dickinson's family.
Of course, the congregation
did have to make some revi-
sions to what was formerly a
church. The white, free-
standing ark was made by
local artist William Bauer,
