always included in the five
top games overall.
This year, Parker Brothers
introduced Real People, the
object being match 10 real
personal facts with
photographs of real people.
Malarkey, also from Parker
Brothers, is a word game
where a player judge decides
if answers are correct or just
a lot of malarkey.
How to Host A Murder is a
role-playing game similar to
the classic board game of
Clue. Around for about six
year, How To . . . is always
appearing with new
episodes. "The Duke's Des- ,
cent," set in 1931 England,
is one of the latest. Cindy
Thornburg, Parker Brothers
vice president of marketing,
says the newest episode, set
for release in November, is
based on the daytime soap
opera, "All My Children."
"We try to put out a game
a month," says Avalon Hill's
Phyllis Opolko. Two recent
releases include Blackbeard,
a pirate game that uses a
map, board and cards, and

Legends of Robin Hood,
which involves a search
through Sherwood Forest.
Avalon Hill, recognized for
its war/strategy games, also
offers a new American histo-
ry series that has been en-
dorsed by the Smithsonian
Institution. The series
focuses on World War II and
is based on actual battles.
Dozens of other new games
have come on the market
since 1990. Western
Publishing is marketing Self
Control, a game of do's and
don'ts. Tabloid Teasers from
Pressman, includes 360 ac-
tual headlines with a miss-
ing word or phrase. Swoggle
is a Scrabble-like word game
from Chieftain Products.
Ravensburger/International
Playthings has Master
Labyrinth, with a network of
paths and deadends.
Companies are also re-
introducing old favorites in
new forms. Pictionary, party
edition, includes a dry-erase
easel and a carrying case;
Pictionary, second edition,
has 2,400 new words. The
Games Gang has Balder-
dash Junior, a kid's version
of its Balderdash. Outburst
II, with 800 additional
topics, is a new edition of
Western Publishing's hit,
Outburst.
Win or Lose, one thing's
for sure. Adult games are
not in short supply and more
are on the way. "There
seems to be endless creativi-
ty in that category," says
Playthings editor Frank
Reysen. "Inventors are con-
stantly working on ideas for
new games." ❑
