Israel Continues
Hitting Lebanon
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israel
continued its air and ar-
tillery assaults on Palestin-
ian and Hezbollah guerrilla
targets in southern Lebanon
last week.
Missile-firing air force jets
flew two missions 10
minutes apart against bases
of the pro-Iranian Hezbollah
in the Jabal Shafi area, just
north of the southern Leb-
anon security zone.
At about the same time,
three Israeli helicopter gun-
ships strafed the Rashidiya
refugee camp east of Sidon, a
base used by the Popular
Front for the Liberation of
Palestine.
The Israel Defense Force
and its allied South Lebanon
Army continued the non-
stop shelling of Hezbollah
positions north of the securi-
ty zone.
Israeli sources said the
purposes of the attacks was
to punish Hezbollah for
planting roads mines in the
security zone, which have
killed or maimed IDF and
SLA troops, and to
discourage local Shi'ite
villagers from sheltering or
otherwise helping the guer-
rillas.
Negev Accident
Kills Five
Tel Aviv (JTA) — A high
speed head-on collision on a
Negev highway killed five
members of one family and
injured six other people near
Kiryat Gat last week.
Four of the dead were wo-
men and the fifth a 6-year-
old girl. All were from Beer-
sheba.
According to police, they
were traveling in a Fiat on
the Beersheba-Kiryat
Malachi highway when the
driver suddenly swerved
into the oncoming lane,
crashing into a Chevrolet
van carrying Bedouin wo-
men workers to their homes
in the al-Azazi encampment.
The Bedouins were
hospitalized and reported in
stable condition. The dead
were buried in the Beer-
sheba cemetery.
They were identified as
Tzipora Gozlan, 47; her 22-
year-old sister, Hanna Ben-
Shimol; their mother, Esther
Ben-Shimol, 60; and
Gozlan's daughters, Ranit
Avitan, 22, and Shiran
Gozlan, 6.
Police said both vehicles
were traveling at high
speeds when they collided.
The impact hurled the Fiat
100 feet down the road.
