Mr. Peres, who was Israel's prime minister in 1988 when Mr. Vanunu was arrested, spoke in response to allegations made after Mr. Maxwell's mysterious death at sea. Mr. Peres, who as prime minister was also responsi- ble for Israel's intelligence activities, said he did discuss anything relating to the Vanunu affair with Mr. Maxwell. The multimillionaire publisher and industrialist, a Czechoslovak-born Jew, was a staunch supporter of Israel. Mr. Maxwell's news- papers are rivals to the Times of London, which published diagrams, provid- ed by Mr. Vanunu, of Israel's nuclear facility in Dimona. Mr. Vanunu, convicted of providing information about Israel's nuclear weapons capabilities to the British paper, is serving 18 years.
