of their education," Mrs.
Scott said. "It expands our
base of knowledge and we
pass that on to our television
producers."
Ami and Risa, both
graduates of Hillel Day
School, entered public high
school this year with great
excitement and just a little
trepidation.
"At Hillel, everyone was
Jewish; classes were small
and teachers knew every-
thing about you," Risa said.
"This year, I was worried-
about making friends and
being lost in a tremendous
school."
Ami,- who attends the
Community Jewish High
School and studies twice a
week with local rabbis, said
the transition to public
school was challenging, but
also rewarding.
"There are lots of myths
about life as a freshman,"
Ami said. "Everyone likes to
scare you about being
bullied or being picked on.
But I've made lots of friends
and it all comes down to the
fact that we're all students
tying to do our best, make
friends, excel in sports and
have some fun."

grade teacher at Hillel, was

M
erger talks are once
again under way
between Sinai Hos-
pital and the Detroit Medical
Center, both sides announced
last week.
Discussions will begin
immediately, proceeding
through March 1992. If
mutually successful, the
outcome will be a letter of
intent for an affiliation,
spokespeople said.
An affiliation would allow
for a complete integration of
programs and would enable
Sinai and the DMC to create
new services for their pa-
tients, officials said.
"The benefit is primarily a
long-term strengthening of
the institution," said
Howard Watts, Sinai's ac-
ting chief executive officer.
"In the short-term, Sinai is
showing signs of improve-
ment."
For the first quarter of this
year, Sinai posted a profit of
$66,000. Sinai had budgeted
for a $1.4 million loss, and
the hospital reported a $2.8
million loss during the same
period last year.
Mr. Watts attributed the
financial turnaround partly
to the August workforce
reduction of 200 employees.
Sinai lost $9.6 million
from July 1990 to June 1991.
The hospital posted a
cumulative loss of about $5.5
million during the three
years prior to fiscal 1991.
With an affiliation, Sinai
will benefit from access to
new capital and being part of
a network, Mr. Watts said.
He also said any arrange-
ment with the DMC must
allow for Sinai to remain an
independent hospital with a
Jewish identity.
"One of the key goals in
pursuing an affiliation is
that both parties will be
strengthened," said David
Campbell, president and
chief executive officer for the
DMC.
This is not the first time
Sinai has gone to the negoti-
ating table with the DMC.
Sinai called off merger talks
with the DMC last
December.
Previously, the hospital
terminated talks with the
giant Henry Ford Health
Care Corp. ❑
