Your Fortune Cookie from Chairman John Wong has

at the 58th annual, honoring
Rabbi M. Robert Syme with
the Justice Louis D. Brandeis
Award, ZOA's highest . . . The
4,000 or so who attended
could only hurl accolades at
this year's fine
entertainment.
And of course Mack Pitt
with his 14-piece orchestra
couldn't be better . . . What
the fellows in his band lack-
ed in personality and smiles
they more than made up with
a lot of good music . . . And
when you really look at it,
some of the most notable
musicians of all times had a
hard time smiling on stage
. . . Those who remember
Johnny "Rabbi" Hodges, the
greatest of them all on the
alto sax for Duke Ellington,
can look to a prime example
. . . But boy could Johnny
blow that horn with the
sweetest tones that sent
tingles up and down many
spines.
The lights on stage going
out gave the audience a good
chuckle when emcee Max
Sosin said, "I hope when the
lights come on I won't find I
was talking to myself" .. .
Not by a long shot . . . as he
had the pleasure of introduc-
ing some wonderful enter-
tainment.
Julie Budd set the tone for
the evening with her ex-
cellent vocal renditions that
almost had people saying
Barbra Streisand sounds like
her . . . Julie's rendition of
"My Yiddishe Mama" was
superb and she was even bet-
ter on "I Love You Porgy"
from George Gershwin's Porgy
and Bess among a slew of
other exceptional warbling
presentations.
David Syme's piano tribute
to his dad was magnificent as
he rippled the keys with so
much feeling on Gershwin's
"Rhapsody In Blue" and a
medley of Jewish tunes.
Following intermission,
Rabbi Syme received the
prestigious award and as
usual received his measure of
laughter from the audience
with beautiful quips.
Moti Giladi looked like a
young Walter Matthau and
was highly entertaining .. .
Too bad the hour had gotten
so late for folks to enjoy him
more.
Those who missed the 58th
Balfour Concert lost out on
one of the better ones.

GET WELL WISHES .. .

to Kay Saperstein.

FOLLOWING THE in-
auguration of Southfield's
newly-elected officials, it was
reception time in the pavilion
where refreshments awaited
the council chambers at-
tendees . . . Among all the
baked goods was one signed,

15%
OFF
TOTAL FOOD BILL

"Magene's Brownies. Denise
Alexander's mother" . . .
They went faster than hot-
cakes in a camp of hungry
lumberjacks and it wasn't
long before the seven dozen
were gone . . . Don't blame
Denise . . . she only eats
them when coming over to
Sam and Magene's home and
raiding the refrigerator .. .
By the way, I'm starting right
now to dun Magene for those
Blondie Brownies made with-
out chocolate for me to gobble
up.
NOT ALL chef/owner
Keith Famie's ideas are on
the cooking which he does
best . . . This time it's his
"Frequent Buyer" Club at
Les Auteurs and home cook-
ing, etc. with customers ear-
ning points for every dollar
they spend . . . Receipts in-
clude point value and mon-
thly updates are sent.
SOCIAL GAMES people
play are the subject of "Social
Plays," Deborah Kashdan's
new exhibit through Jan. 3 at
the Lawrence Street Gallery
in Pontiac . . . The vivid, col-
orful oils featured in "Social
Plays" document the social
scene of the '90s . . . each of
her paintings are miniature
dramas of the games men and
women play in today's socie-
ty . . . Her works are mostly
sold to collectors in the metro
Detroit Jewish community.
A BIT DIFFERENT than
giving a portion of the pro-
ceeds or so much off on mer-
chandise is the Dec. 4 event
by Antonio Salons in Birm-
ingham and Walled Lake .. .
Pontiac Rescue Mission will
receive all the proceeds of
that day from both places,
5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. . . . "We'll
cut hair until midnight if peo-
ple are waiting. No one will
be turned away." . . . Both
salons will be fully staffed for
shampoo, haircut and blow-
dry, $10, first-come, first-
served with Pontiac's home-
less the main beneficiaries.
PLACE HAS BEEN set
for the 10th annual dinner,
May 9, by Michigan Cancer
Foundation . . . The annual
black tie biggie will be at the
Palace of Auburn Hills . . . Ti-
tle will be "A Championship
Evening at The Palace."
BILL COLLIN, C.W.C. (cer-
tified working chef), new ex-
ecutive chef at Sheraton Oaks
Hotel in Novi, was Tom
Monaghan's personal chef on
Drummond Island, assisting
him with private functions at
his personal residence . . . He
also taught ice-carving at
Washtenaw Community Col-
lege and has won silver
medals in pastry and cold
food displays at the 1988 and
1989 Michigan Culinary Art
Salon exhibitions. ❑
