The article in the Nov. 15
issue of The Jewish News
regarding the difficulties of
local fund-raising in a reces-
sionary environment does not
reflect the experience of the
American Technion Society.
The Detroit Chapter has
just concluded a near record
year, raising nearly $1.5
million for the Israel Institute
of Technology. This reflects
the achievement of ATS na-
tionally which has just con-
cluded its seventh successive
record year with a $33 million
campaign.
Virtually every organiza-
tion feels the impact of the
burdens that Israel must
shoulder as the result of
massive aliyah. Perhaps
ATS's results reflect the
recognition that the ultimate
answer to Israel's self-
sufficiency is high technology
and brainpower intensive in-
dustries .. .

Office Closure
Helps Hebrew U.
A Nov. 15 article in The
Jewish News reported the
closure of our Detroit office.
The American Friends of the
Hebrew University closed its
office in Detroit and in
several other metropolitan
areas with the goal of max-
imizing the dollars sent to
Jerusalem and minimizing
the cost of fund-raising.
These cost-cutting meas-
ures are being implemented
in order to help generate the
massive funds the Hebrew
University requires to meet
the critical needs of new im-
migrants. The Hebrew Uni-
versity has absorbed more im-
migrant students than has
any other university in Israel.
These new immigrants have
pushed the university's total
enrollment to more than
21,000 with the concomitant
demand for additional hous-
ing, faculty and scholarships.
During these historic times,
it is not business as usual for
the Hebrew University or its
Friends'
organizations
around the world. The Detroit
Chapter of the American
Friends of the Hebrew Uni-
versity has never had more
volunteers than at the pre-
sent time and it continues to
raise significant amounts of
money for the Hebrew Uni-
versity. Although a local of-
fice no longer exists in
Detroit, the Detroit area will
continue to be served by the
regional office in Cleveland,
which can be reached through
the following toll-free
number: 1-800-969-2348.
As president of the Detroit
Chapter, I encourage you to
join me and the other
"friends" of the Hebrew
University in the Detroit area
as we continue our efforts on
behalf of the University of the
Jewish People — The Hebrew
University of Jerusalem.
