Mr. Lee was not about to turn the other cheek. "I was going to tell them to kiss my ass." But he didn't. "I took it out because it wasn't needed," he says. Spike Lee's current project as director, a film biography of the slain black leader Malcolm X, has already been a subject of some controversy. When the project was an- nounced and before he got the job, Mr. Lee had campaigned for a black director to helm the film, arguing that a white director would not be able to do the right thing by this im- portant figure in black history. Another controversy has in- volved a conversation Mr. Lee supposedly had with hotshot new black film director Mat- ty Rich. Reportedly, Mr. Lee lashed out at Mr. Rich when the newcomer's first film Straight Out of Brooklyn was scheduled to open at the same time as Jungle Fever. Not so, says Mr. Lee of the alleged flare-up over frac- tionalizing black audiences. But then, he agrees, such con- frontations make good headlines. And whose fault is that? "When they (the press) have a chance to turn two black filmmakers against each other, they'll do it." In carving out his own path, Mr. Lee must first clear away the thickets that shroud Hollywood's image of the black role in film-making. To that end, Jungle Fever offers an appropriate statement from and for Mr. Lee. ❑ Chamber Ensemble Violin Concert The Lyric Chamber Ensem- ble will present a program titled "Gypsy Fiddlers," featuring two outstanding DSO violinists 3:30 p.m. Nov. 24 at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial.
